Copy files to iPad without iTunes?

Sorry for the noob question, is this possible? I have a work iPad and really don't want to install the travesty that is iTunes on my PC just so I have a few things to watch on my weekend away... !

Air Video and Plex will let you sync movies down locally for offline use. Both are paid for apps and need a server running on your computer though.

Avplayerhd does something similar. You can transfer files from your pc with an ftp program and I think you can use the web browser to do the same thing.

I can't check at work but you appear to be able to do a wifi upload as well, like this: http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-transfer-movies-videos-to-vlc-for-iphone-ipad-using-wi-fi-upload/ whcih looks the business.

Can anyone confirm? Also will I be able to play mkv and other non-iOS friendly files with VLC?
