in the manual it says that you can copy saved games / demos / trailers etc to your connected pc to save space.

i cannot figure out how. has anyone done it yet?

I would assume that it can be done using a usb flash drive, haven't done any game saves but I know the 360 reads files that are on my flash drive no reason why t5he reverse won't work.

There is a very good reason why it won't work.
Microsoft has not included write support on the 360, apparently for security reasons. It's what is stopping us transferring PGR3 photos to PC.

Could you plug the HD directly into the pc with a usb extension cable?

The 360's hard disk is not USB, it uses a laptop SATA disk. The next hurdle is the proprietary file system used. It can be read through a Linux OS after quite a lot of fiddling but for the effort required, you may as well just accept it's not possible.
