Copying Music from one computer to another via ethernet cable?

Hey all,

basically, i have lots and lots of music i need to copy over from my laptop to my computer. I dont have a cd/dvd burner on my laptop and only currently have a 1gb storage device which is my mp3 player lol so dont want to have to copy over music, put on pc, copy over music, put on pc etc etc etc.
so is this possible? im hoping so lol

Should be easily done, assuming you have a network card (onboard or otherwise) in each computer. Just link them, enable file and printer sharing on both, then copy your MP3s to the other computer via the "My Network Places" window.

if your going from one computer to the next straight without a switch or anything you will need a 'cross over' cable

If your transferring a lot of files I reccomend getting gigabit.

Unless either network card has the ability to use crossover mode using a standard cable (presumably it just switched the pins in software).

Firewire is always good too if you have it, I always managed to get nice speeds with it.

No you don't- most newer machines and even quite a selection of older machines have the ability to use a standard straight through cable

I've not experienced that, although I rarely use a cross over cable.

Though considering a lot of hard drives transfer rates are well below 100Mbps even on the outermost tracks it probably wouldnt make a difference on the laptop anyway I suppose.

Works for me- I was using it like that only last friday without a problem. Similarly, a lot of switches have the ability to patch ports using a cross-over cable instead of a straight through one

I was aware that switches were auto sensing, but not NICs. I'll take your word for it though.
