My girlfreind just come back from a photoshoot, and for her to buy the images off them where something like;

7"x5" print £50
6"x8" print £60
A4 print £70
12"x16" print £90
CD image £100

which is ridiculous, now she has bought two images at a4, but she was told, that these images have a copyright on them or Now do they mean there will be copyright underlining when scanned across light, or something along the lines of no photo place will scan them in due to them holding the copyright?

It means you don't own the copyright of the image, so if you try and reproduce it (Through scanning etc) then you are breaking the copyright and the law. So if you want another copy, then your going to have to cough up the money.

I'm guessing she's been to Venture, which seemly fleece you with their printed photographs, I'm afraid that's pretty much all you can do - pay for one or two, you can buy a small size and then blow it up against copyright but that's wrong.

And something I don't condone at all. People like Venture might charge and arm and leg for their prints, but that is something you should have looked at before doing the photoshoot and they are running a business. Also if anyone here started selling prints and making a bit of money from Photography im sure you'd be more than a little annoyed if people started copying your work themselves because they thought you were charging too much.

My look independent shop will also refuse to copy anything that looks like its a "Pro's" work unless you own the copyright...

Personally I think that when you go to a studio for shots you should discuss copyright over the images. It's often better to get the negs and pay more, then you can get more prints done somewhere a bit cheaper. If the Pro is not willing to give you copyright, walk and find somewhere who will.

(though I'm saying this having not done it... I like to be behind the lens not in front...)

As to it being ridiculous, I actually think those prices are fairly competitive. My other half has a family portait on the wall which is a 10x8 and cost over £250. The 7x5 prints are pricey though.

Was it Venture?

If so I actually think that (if it's a quality shot) they are good value.. some of their work is stunning...

Venture, it was not it was http://www.newidstudios.co.uk/ which my girlfreind said was amazing. However they wanted to charge her for every little blemish e.g. she was told if a spot was shown, they charge 10 pounds for each manipulation

Also i thought You are free to copy and use those images in any way you want, providing you don't do anything which undermines their originality, like mass producing copies for sale or claiming you made the original.

Nope. By default, the photographer keeps the copyright. So unless you pay for the copyright you have no right to reproduce or do anything with the image. The price you pay simply pays for the print.

They do look like a pro set up, so you're getting what you pay for, literally. Baring in mind the amount of work that's gone into getting where they are, I think those prices are pretty good really :)

Looks like they might offer an image on a CD + copyright for £50... might be worth doing...

Edit: Sorry, I realise you wrote that in your first post (but for £100), perhaps I wasn't looking in the right place.

I don't have a high opinion of Venture, both my sisters and a friend have been and TBH what they came back with wasn't exactly brilliant. Some of the post processing was shocking IMO, it looked like they went through the images and used random PP filters in photoshop (they bought the CD with all their images on).

It could just have been that branch, or that the procesor only did a few shots properly but if you buy a CD with lots of images on I would expect most of the images to be manipulated properly, if you can't do it don't sell it..

If thats the case, you complain and get them to do something you want. Hopefully you have an idea of what you are looking for when you agree to the shoot and let them know. If they do something you don't wnat, get them to change.... it's your cash...
