I work for a manufacturing company and have recently designed a website for them. I have just received a letter from another company detailing the unauthorised use of copyright material on said website.

I borrowed a sentence from another site that described another product completely but worked well in describing my product. We sell similar products but we're not in direct competition with each other.

The sentence is less than 30 words and it seems ridiculous, it's hardly Shakespeare and I was just being lazy at the time to be honest lol.

Anyone had a similar experience?

There is a good chance the other company is kicking off because that particular sentence will be a big part of their Search Engine Optimisation thing.

If you quoted their decription verbatim then yeah just change it it a bit to satisfy them, will probably take you less time than getting into an argument about it.

I think it comes under Article 4, Page 5 of "If no one finds out, it'll be fine".

I know from books that they have to state on the first few pages that so and so states their rights to this book etc etc.

However admitting guilt you should try to avoid any legal redress.

Ah yes, but the disclaimer under subparagraph F, section 3 goes on to state "It's a crime if you're caught".

Nope, it helps but isn't mandatory.

I believe you gain copyright just by having produced it.

You are correct. Any images you take or create and any text you write has automatic copyright once published online. The copyright notices on the bottom of most websites aren't even required but they add it there as then there can be no 'I didn't know' excuses.

shame you didnt give credit for the description to the other company onr your website. But as they are for different products tricky how to blag that...
