Hello Guys, I am new here, thought I would say hello. I need/want a little more performance from my 3 + year old Core 2 Duo based system so I went out and bought a Phenom 955 + motherboard, then felt guilty and cancelled the order. To be honest for what I do a Phenom 955 is more than overkill. My gaming is on the PS3 and the only thing I use the PC for is as a media server for streaming content to PS3 via PS3 media server, or I convert movies to VOB using MKV2VOB copy them over to the ps3 etc. On occassion I do a bit of photo editing too but that is it. I will be upgrading to Windows 7 and may get a few RTS games so would be nice to have a little more oomph!

My PC is still fine the way it is but I needed to spend money on something electrical so what I decided to do as a little project was to overlock the processor a little. My Asus motherboard is crap, an Asus P5-VD2-MX and will only overclock from 1.87GHZ to 1.997GHZ!! So a new Motherboard it is. I could have bought an expsensive motherboard but after reading a few things about the overclocking ability of the Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L decided it was fine for what I wanted, besides I wanted to keep things cheap as possible and I am not after a mega overclock.

I also bought a new Piano Black case and will buy an uprated cooler as well. I have to check the speed of my ram as from what I have read this can restrict potential when overclocking. I Have 3gb and am pretty sure it is 667mhz but due to my current motherboard it is running at 533mhz. A friend of mine has 1x 2gb 800mhz ram which he said he will give to me so hoping that it will be sufficient?

Once I get everything installed I will probably be asking some stupid questions should I get stuck.

Also, just curious, how compariable would a Core 2 Duo E6300 clocked to 3.20GHZ be if comparing to an E8400 and how high a clock would an an E6300 need to match or supass if that is possible?

Anyway sorry for the long post, thanks.

Ryan

There are different models of E6300. I own the same one as you, and it doesn't overclock more than that regardless of motherboard - I have an Asus P5W DH Deluxe.

Have to say I have no problems with it at all though... currently running E6300 (2x1.8) with 9800GT playing EVE on High settings at 1920x1200.

I have read some older articles from 2006-2007 and have seen the same processor clock to 3.7ghz, obviously using top components etc. If I can get it near 3.00Ghz then I will be more then chuffed. To be honest, as my current case is tatty looking and most of my USB's are are now broken (front and back) I wanted a new case (sadly :D) to match my other AV equipment! I then thought I may as well change the motherboard if I am going to change my case as everything needs to come out, then that got me thinking of a new CPU etc but I just settled on the motherboard.

For me, I know my computer is more than capable enough, just I would welcome the extra speed of an overclock as well as the challenge of tinkering.

Sorry to say you won't get anywhere near 3 GHZ with that board, to do that you would need a board capable of over 400 FSB.

Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L

It would be ok with the newer model E6300 or an E5300 due to the higher multi and to get anywhere near the performance of an E8400 at stock you would need to clock it to 3.6 or more.

I kind of thought that as the multipliers can not be changed unlike an extreme edition/black editition.

How high will the bus speed go as it is at 266mhz standard right?

By the way Merry Christmas. (I am at work still!!!)

Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L "should" be capable of more than 400FSB stable - its rated for 400FSB on the gigabyte site and I have another board that is otherwise identical (but not the exact same model) that does atleast 470FSB.

Nice to hear from you wanting to O/C a socket775, I think these are far from outdated in the common arena. I love getting value for money (my missus loves it too ;))

There are sooo many CPU's and some are good value when clocking them up, a good mobo is essential and a good HSF.

Hey guys, I have installed the motherboard in the new case etc and had a go at overclocking. I have the bus speed set to 390mhz which gives a clock speed of 2.73GHZ. If I go any higher the system boots but resets back to standard values. I have loaded the CPU the and it it rmeains stable and does not get higher than 52 degrees with the standard cooler. I have not messed with CPU/RAM volatage or overclocked the ram so with a little advise from you guys I am sure to get her clocking a little higher. I am hoping to get her to 3.0GHZ.

Any Suggestions where to go now?

PS my ram is 667speed.

firstly set the ram to the recommended voltage, didn't catch the make of yours but its usually ~1.9 - 2.1.

It sounds like you have reached the limit at the moment so just increase the vcore a little bit at a time, the higher the vcore the higher the temps so just be sure to keep checking those temps at idle and load especially.

Try realtemp if your not already or another temp monitor and keep an eye on your distance to TJ max. ~65 - 70 is your limit I'd say but i'm not familiar with your chip.

Also what are the timings on your ram at the moment, is it linked with the fsb?
If it's linked try unlinking it so your only overclocking the cpu therefore isolates the reason its not holding the clock.

If you manage to get it stable at acceptable temps then start on your ram, ideally you'd want it 1:1 but it's not required. loosen the timings, set the frequency and gradually start tightening them, 5 - 5 - 5 - 15, or as close to that.

Dont forget as you clock the hell out of the motherboard, the memory clocks are increased in direct proportion, so if you have the motherboard set for DDR2 @667mhz, but then overclock the motherboard by 20% the ram will be pushed to 800mhz.

If you pick the slower speed for ram 533 or even less etc, then as you overclock the ram will still end up at its rated speed.

Once you are in windows CPU-Z will show the current frequency of your ram It will show 333mhz for DDR2-667 (PC5300).

So to achieve the maximum stable overclock, you'll may well need to select a slower ram multplier/ratio/standard in bios, and/or increase the voltages and slacken the memory timings to compensate for the overclock.
