Hi.

Well I'm upgrading my CPU soon and I'm getting stuck between the E8400 and the Q6600, people say the Q6600 is better due to the fact it has 4 cores but then people say its better to have the E8400 as it will most likely overclock much easier and run cooler, also most games and apps dont utilize quad core at the moment so it mkaes dual core even more worth while?

What do you think, I'm really stuck between these 2 CPU's.

Thanks.

I dunno why, but in my head the E8400 looks better, I imagine it as black whilse the Q6600 blue and that alone makes it more tempting

Both of you ave good points I think, 1066fsb, old 65nm tech, but Quad Core could come in handy in the future.

Forget about Quads being faster then the Core2duos.... even at the same mhz the Core2duos are matching it if not faster :

Am sure when alan wake arrives the time for Quads maybe there, but frankly doesnt look like quads taken off.

Blame Crysis and the other games, but I recall saying I bet crysis is poor and shows no improvement with quads only cos they said all there in house pcs are Core2duos so naturally it was gonna process and be built on those platforms 1st.

Id be more confident in a real winner between Quad vs Dual if someone showed supreme commander using max core proggy using quad vs dual, but doesnt look like anyones bothered to see the difference ;)

I was expecting the quads to jump all over duals in Supcom.

So you also say penryn dual?

**Edit** Quad has a small lead over the penryn there hmmm..

LOL what!!??

Looks like you've already made up your mind :)

I'd like a quad because I like the perspective of running 4x F@H + Dr. DivX + game at the same time

Dr. Divx with all quality settings at max takes a few hours on my E4300 to encode a film, so hopefully the Q6600 will manage a bit better!!

Nah I havent, besides its not just to help me, generall discussion of the Vs in here, thought it was best to create a thread specifically for that so there is no ruining the thread of the wolfs :).

How much electric does the Q6600 G0 use compared to say an overclocked C2D? double? tripple? I cant have electric bill rising at a massive rate.

At the moment I usually play games like crysis and tdu and in abckground ahve Opera open with around 20-30+ web pages open, AOL VR Browser, MSN, Xfire and typical things like antivirus and windows side bar.

So the quads may well increase electric bill? If thats the case I think maybe dual is the only way? I cannot what so ever have the electric bill going up, thats like a disaster, I wonder what an E8400 at 4Ghz 1.45V would use? I suppose waiting is an option, but I dunno, depends how I feel.

May 29th 2007, before price drops, quad was not an option then. I might wait, just cant resist new parts :p.

Not sure, I dont care about electricity as its cheap for me from the big Nuke station over river :).

I did not realise cost of it is an issue in the UK, I know some USA peeps claim it is where they are.

Correct Will, you would OC any CPU anyhow :)

Dont you live in the UK?

Well if my parents are allready not liking the electric bill with a E6600 @ 3.4Ghz 1.47V what will a Q6600 pushing 3.4Ghz do to them?

Ummm ok, Q6600 starting to sound like its best choice, but what with the Q6600 do to my parents when its overclocked?, they allready not happy with the £100+ electric bills every quarter so whats a Q6600 overclocked going to do to that? Also bear in mind I have a P35C DS3R. :\

If your worried about the leccy bill then give them £25 each time a bill comes in.

I've offered, my mum is like, dont be stupid! as if handing her £25 dont work :o. I gonna get a quad I think, apparently the E8400's are not overclocking to 4Ghz easilly so dunno now. I'm going to post a thread for good clocking C2Q 6600 and might jump.

From the other thread:

At the end of the day new games will support quad core and from those results the gains are massive with quad core supported games.

The quad even beats a 200MHZ faster dual core in everything aprt from company of heros.

Even then its by a tiny amount even though the dual is running 200 Mhz faster.

Well I just seen those benchmarks and I never realised even 1 core on a Q6600 is faster than one core on an E6850 even though on the quad its 200Mhz slower , seems odd but if this is indeed true I'm going to go the quad route I think proberbly.

Maybe I should just keep my E6600 surely it will hold and be strong up untill september? I'm going to college/uni in september or october and I'll be moving across the country so will proberbly build a brand new PC or update it before I go, so maybe E6600, 4GB DDR2 ram, P35C DS3R and ATi 3870X2 should play most or everything high at 1680x1050 up untill september?

gdgd thats what I am going to do, I'm sure I can wait till nahalem or w/e to get a new CPU and I rekon I could get a cpu for cheap then that can easilly blow this e6600 right out of the water.

If you just want to play games buy yourself a celeron for about £50 and stop groaning about power use. That way you will use a single core cps and less power.
Tut! these people want everything and nothing, so that is what they get. Nothing.

If you say soemthing like that get the **** outa the thread!
