Core 2 duo help??

Hi back in the day when pentium 4 was the thing i knew what was good and bad but now Core 2 duo what the hell is this?

I need a laptop for work and I would prefer to spend my money on a kick ars gamer but work must come first so please give us your knowlage I have about £700

If you want something upgradable don't buy a laptop, sorry but is true
