Core 2 Duo Temps

Over there
Guys,

I recently got myself a new C2D rig. Its a 1.86Ghz Chip with an Asus P5W DH motherboard and an Artic Cooling 7 Pro jobbie on it. I am trying to keep the noise of the computer down to a minimum so I originally went with :

The CPU Cooler (1fan)
GPU Cooler (1fan)
Enermax PSU (2fans)
1 Out-take 80mm Fan (1fan)

With this setup my idle CPU temp was about 31degress (using Speedfan).

Lately one of the fans has started making a god awful noise - really bad high high pitched noise that really gets on my ****. I thought it was the Artic Cooler that was playing up. Just to be sure though I disconnected the 80mm sunon outtake fan. When I repowered my computer, i could hardly hear the computer. Its perfect. I would love to be able to keep it like this.

However!

My idle temperature has gone up 10 degrees. Idling at around the 40degree mark. I am currently stressing the CPU to see what the load temps are like and currently it is at 61degrees (again in speedfan). When I load up Everest though, that will show me the temperature of both cores - which are at around 75/76degrees - but I am assuming that core temps are always going to be a lot higher and its 61degree one I should be watching?

So are them temps safe or do I need a blow o ut fan on the back? I cannot go back to using that sunon fan cause of the noise it makes. If you think I need a blow-out fan, can someone suggest a VERY LOW noise 80mm fan? It needs to be 80mm as that is what my case takes. Needs to be one without any dodgey wirring noises or high pitched noises.

Thanks.

Stuppy

You need an exhaust fan. Also that board uses passive cooling and relies on good case airflow. Have a look at the ys-tech silent. They are very cheap and they are by the far the best 80mm fans i have ever used and i cant hear them at 12v and still push a good airflow.

Use intel tat or coretemp for monitoring temps speedfan gives wrong temps ;).

yeah i agree speedfan is usually about 10°c out, intel TAT or coretemp uses the on-die thermometer so is much more accurate :)

Using CoreTemp then, my idle core temps are between 58-62degrees.

I think im gonna order a few different brands of fans and see which one turns out best. These are the ones ive added to my shopping basket (not OcUK)

1. 80mm Panaflo FBA08A12L Hydro Wave (Fluid Dynamic) Bearing Fan Ultra Low Noise DC Brushless 2Pin

2. Silverstone FN82 80mmx32mm Low Noise Case Fan 2100rpm

3. Zalman ZM-F1 80mm fan

4. 80mm Enermax Blue Neon Case FAN with Manual/Auto Fan Control

Will order them - one of them has to low noise with decent airflow.

Hrm, another hot E6300...

What's your stepping? Mine's 29B (FPO# L629B275) ... someone else with the same stepping as me has a hot one, I think that maybe there's a batch of hot chips.

I lapped my CPU then made sure that I put the THINNEST POSSIBLE layer of AS5 on my processor. Idles as 40'c where it used to idle at 52'c :D

Dunno what the stepping is.

Im not really that worried tbh. These chips are meant to work up to stupid temps without breaking, and it will throttle before it burns to death.Ive got them 4 fans on order so that will take some of the heat off. :P

Instead of buying 4 fans you couldve bought a Tuniq Tower CPU cooler and one fan, as some people are saying that the Arctic Freezer doesnt have the best contact with the CPU. Dont get me wrong my AF7 Pro is fine and puts my CPU at just over 50C fully loaded but that is at a lower voltage of 1.3v

You also have a major overclock going on as well tho @ 3.29ghz. :p

Gaz - looking at your build you have the same case and cooler as me. What are your thoughts on how close the AF7 is to the rear exhaust fan? I'm not sure how efficient that is, blowing into a spinning fan... wouldn't it disrupt it somewhat?

Also are you using AS5 as my load temps are about 44-47 without overclock.

Why would you want to run a cpu that throttles?
Would suck in games imo ;)

When it reaches a certain temperature the CPU slows down so that it can cool off a bit.

I am not saying my CPU is going to throttle, I think it has a fair bit to go. I am saying that its not going to hurt it to run hot - under the throttle temps.

I have ordered htem fans anyway so everything will be fine :p

Same stepping here, my E6300 at stock with a Tuniq tower idles at around 27oc.

I put 3 strips of AS5 on the CPU, one larger centre and 2 smaller on left and right, similar arrangement to the heat pads on the stock hsf.

Is that with the fan on full blast may I ask? I'm looking at replacing my AC FP7 with a Tuniq.

Yeah, taking it down to half power which drastically reduced fan noise (not that it was overly noisey to begin with) made temps rise 2-2.5 degrees c.

This is with my side panel off by the way.

Sorry to bump this old thread but saves me starting a new one.

I have got a Zalman fan in there that is running on a low voltage connection. My computer is pretty much silent now (except for a buzzing noise coming from the fan, but I think i can get over that - just need to get used to it).

I am running TAT in Vista - have been running load test for about 5minutes now and both cores are between 55-60degrees.

That is ok for load temps right?

I am not really fussed about the temps tbh so long as they are within what Intel recommends. What is the top temp they recommend?

yeah my e6600 idles at around 41 deg, thats with cpu lapped, an artic 7 pro and a atec 900 case.
annoying cause i want to overclock badly!
