OK guys, need some help here.

Looking to upgrade and not sure which chip to get

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

OR

Intel Pentium 4 805 Dual Core "LGA775 Smithfield" 2.66GHz (533FSB)

I have read reviews and both achieve around 3.6 on air with decent Volts ands Temps.

The 805 is £100 cheaper than the Conroe, so there must be a reason, I just don't know what.

Is the cost worth it?

Cheers Guys

If you play games, or do a lot of multitasking is definitely worth it.
Have a look here and just change the benchmark to which ever game or program you would use.

So where would I notice the improvement? In games or just multi-tasking?

What would be the best board to go for do you guys think, and would I need to change my RAM?

Ok,

Well if I were to keep my current RAM is there a similar skt 939 chip that I would be able to get to boost my performance?

up to about 200 quid I guess if my board will take the new chip

there is a c2d board that takes ddr and ddr2 ram so u can still get c2d for £200 i think its an asrock

You'll need to do some research as the AsRock motherboard is not sold by OC. It can support DDR and DDR2 memory.

If you stick to S939 then a dual core opty (165 would work well with your mobo) would give a boost but not as much as C2D

what are you looking to upgrade for exactly? if gaming, what resolution do you play at. for price, i dunno, how much to dual core 2nd hand chips go for these days, a 2.5-2.6Ghz X2 while yes, not being able to encode a dvd as quickly as a higher clocked c2d, wouldn't give noticable differences in framerate in anything except a very VERY few select titles, like sup commander, but even then a 2.6Ghz duallie should be basically enough. 99% of games now, and 99% of games in the next year a dual core barely improves performance over a single core.

if for general desktop then no chip will make a big difference, if you do like to encode and stuff or only play sup commander and a couple flight sims then by all means get a c2d though then i would suggest you mayaswell make the leap to a decent board and ddr2 and get the very cheapest chip you can get as the cheapest ones should hit 3Ghz with ease on very quiet air cooling, few chips actually do hit 3.6ghz easily, you're looking at 3-3.2Ghz on most chips as "easy" and its MORE than enough for anything but the very highest end encoding/3d rendering work(design, not gaming).

if you game at 1600x1200 a 7900 515mb card, or x1900xt might make a worthwhile and cheap upgrade, if you play at 1920x1200 go grab a 8800gts 640mb.

Wow, Very comprehensive. Thanks

I don't do much gaming on the PC at the moment, SupComm, C&C3 and Stalker, have a 360 so most of my gaming is done on there, the only change will be when the likes of HL2 Ep2 and Crysis come out.

I do a lot of converting xvid to DVD and unpacking large (7GB ish) files, but I don't think upgrading will make that much difference for what I want.

Maybe I'll leave it till Crysis comes out and overhaul my whole rig, I'm running @ nearly 3Ghz now so maybe for 300-600mhz difference it's a little pointless spending atm.

wait for price cuts

AMD price cuts are coming on 09 April, and the Intel price cuts are slated for 22 April. Probably best to wait until a month or so after that to let the good prices filter through.

Having said that, the really good price cuts are anticipated in Q3.
