Hi guys, I'm on the upgrade route to C2D
I oringinally looked at getting an E6600 but now I'm thinking E6400, Asus Vista M/B and using my graphics for now.
I'm keen to get on with this as I've had Vista OEM sitting in a box for 2 weeks now and I'm getting fed up with the hassles I've been having with XP.
Trouble is, with these price cuts coming, when is ever a good time to upgrade?
I could do as proposed then upgrade again to a higher processor but then my E6400 will have lost it's worth.
I did think of buying the above motherboard and buying a cheapo CPU until the cuts come in.
I did buy OEM Vista as Retail was out of my reach, so I want to have a settled rig before installing it, due to the upgrade issues with OEM vista.
Any thoughts? All advice appreciated!!

yea because your forgetting the VAT and margin..

thats the distribution buy price for like 1000 units.

add 10% here and there for margin, and then 17.5% TAX, and you'll end up with a figure closer to the mark.

Work it out in %.

US Conroe E6300 $183 > $163 = 11%

UK Conroe E6300 £112 > 11% = £100

Quite good actually considering we get ripped off usually.

Very good price actually. And the E4300 will be even lower too, so it would be a very good investment for the overclocking capabilities.

I was thinking of getting a 4300, but to be honest, with the 6400 looking to be dirt cheap (or the 6420 with the 4mb cache), it looks like the better choice. Sure though, a 4300 could make an awesome and cheap rig, especially if you get 3-3.2ghz from it.

Tis true. And i see what you mean. on OCuk the E4300 is £111.61 and the E6300 is £119.84. Its obvious to go with the better one for a small £8 extra.

It'll be an agonising wait!
What cheapo CPU could I go for in the mean time to get onto the new board and Vista?

Well, I've made the jump from AMD to Intel, I hope it lives up to it!
I've now received an E6400, an Asus P5B Plus- Vista and I'm waiting on 2gb of OCZ 800mhz Ram coming.
Sound fine?
I maybe will upgrade CPU later on, but at least I should have a good board to start with.

You shouldn't need to upgrade your cpu for a while. The 6400 should give you a nice boost over your current setup, especially if (when!) you overclock it ;)
