I have just changed from C2D E6600 @3.33GHz to a Q6700 @3.4GHZ
A win win you would think?
My PC benchmarks far better than before 15000 3dmarks to 18000 3dmarks.
So why do I now get a small amount of stutter particularly in FarCry2 ??
I suspect it has something to do with the 2x4 mb of cache on the quad chip?
Everything is stable, please help as I am thinking I should have bought a Wolfdale instead.
(Do you get the same thing with Corei7??)
I am running XP with an nVidia card (GTX285):(

PSU *should* be OK. Not sure what they are like. Personally I would reset the CMOS and go from there. Run it at stock for a while then start the timings/overclocking process manually again. Only other thing I can think of is --> does the MOBO have a 4/8 pin socket near the CPU socket and is there a cable in it?

Reset your CMOS and re-apply your settings? What PSU do you have?

- Pea0n

Tried that, didn't work (good idea though)
I am tempted to put my Q6700 straight onto ebay and get an E8600:(
Anymore suggestions?

There is an 8 pin power lead that comes straight from the PSU.
I will see how I get on at stock speed 2.66Ghz

Hey SkodaMart,

So in short are you saying your system ran your games fine and stutter free before you swapped out only the chip (dual > quad) and then noticed some slowdowns?

what memory are you using and what motherboard?

If you have some PC2-8500 (DDR2-1066) then leave your processor at stock and adjust the memory so its running at the faster speed

Quad Q6700 @ 2.66GHz (10x266)
Memory at 533MHz (DDR2-1066)

Load up some games and see if the stutter is still there! :)

Hi Big.Wayne,
Don't get me wrong my framerates are better with the Quad CPU, however I get stutters on Quad cores especially with FarCry 2. If you Google this there are loads of people with Quad cores and ATI cards complaining about stutter.
I have an nVidia card.
I have just reapplied my overclock to 3.4GHz and disabled cores 2&3 so that I am only running cores 0&1. Hey presto the stutter has gone (for the most part, it isn't perfect but I don't think it ever was)
I am running Crucial Ballistix 800MHz at 680Mhz (synchronous)
I am pulling my hair out! I have been benchmarking for 2 days solid!

Why would you want to do a silly thing like that?

The Q6700 is an awsome cpu...Reinstall the lates GFX drivers mobo drivers and run at stock.

Is the game got the latest patch?

Don't blame the cpu dude.

I have just noticed something strange on The Witcher.
If you open task manager Ctrl/Alt Delete and click the performance tab, The Witcher only uses core 0.
If you then click processes and right click witcher.exe click set affinity and untick core 0.
Alt/tab back into the game then Alt/tab back out again you will see that the game is now using cores 1,2&3 evenly.

Have you tried updating the BIOS on your motherboard? Its not likely to solve it, but it is a vague possibility it could help...

I have done all that. It is foolish to abandon it because of problems with 1 game. I will see how it goes with other applications.

Best case, remove windows ^

:)

edit: yeah, not very helpful advice. I'll second that it isn't the cpu at fault. In my opinion, most likely is that you didn't reset the cmos and revert to stock when changing processor, next most likely is graphics drivers, then I'd blame windows.

Well I am back to my E6600! There will be an as new Q6700 with a 1.25v VID going on ebay shortly!
I am not convinced with all this multicore witchcraft!

This has to be the most noobish thing I have ever heard on these forums!

Completely disregard all of what we have said and get rid of a vastly superior chip.

well done mate....sheesh

LOL! Sorry, It just seems better to me! I didn't see any benefit of the Q6700 and they run hot as hell;)
