Core 2 Quads - Who still using them?

Believe it or not, I just sold the following for £100;
ASUS P5KC, Q6600, 4GB OCZ DDR2-800 PLATINUM Rev.2 DUAL CHANNEL

And then bought the following from a mate for £100
Foxconn Blackops, Q9650, 4GB OCZ DDR3 PC3-16000 / 2000 MHz / Flex II XLC

Running with HD6950 and OCZ Vertex 120GB, transferred directly over, only had to update sound drivers, system is noticeably quicker now... I can't really afford the £300 to go i5/i7 quad core route atm.

Still using my Q9550 (Currently clocked to 4GHz) and thats alongside a laptop w/ i7 3610QM and GTX675m and for most uses theres practically nothing in it - granted the laptop CPU is clocked a little lower than a comparable desktop would be and is much faster at certain things. But for general desktop use and most games when running just one of my 470s performance is more or less identical.

My9450 is still running happily at 3.8ghz coupled with a 460 and 8 gig of ram in my boys rig and is used solely for gaming

Replaced in my rig with a 2600k at 4.5 ghz and my aging 6970 I've had since launch replacing my gpu and donating to my boys rig as soon as the next gen appears

My friend has a q6600 stock speed and a AMD 6770. The cpu supplies enough brunt to push the gfx card to the limit and seems plenty quick enough for daily tasks.

But ultimately it's up to you, Do you want/need a faster CPU/GFX card. If you use your system and your happy with it then keep it, but I think your asking questions here because maybe you are not happy with it.

I'm very happy with my 2500k and it's quite fast, I monitor my cpu usage on my extra screen and rarely see it over 50% utilization so I think I will probably keep it for another 2 years or so.

Perhaps start to monitor your cpu utilization and that should answer your question. If it's at 100% frequently then it might be a bottle neck for the applications you run and you should see a speed increase with a upgrade.

I've still got a Q8400 in my HTPC, and I would have been still running my Q9650 if I needed a desktop (I sold it as I used my laptop as it was more flexible)

Another Q6600 user here! What an almighty chip it is, can run BF3 on ultimate at 1080p, obviously helped by the 6950, but it's still very CPU intensive! I think I'll be upgrading next year though, once I have my car project on the road, I can save up for a new rig. I'm liking mini-itx :D

As an aside im now considering using mine for server duties will be good sat under the stairs ticking over running my news feeds media duties and the like

Even underclocked and minus the 8800gtx it will be pulling 125W+ at the wall. That adds up 24/7. Id be more than tempted to sell and use the money to part fund a cheap low power build.

Should be less than 100w, my old Q6600 with on-board video was pulling 70-80w at idle if I recall correctly. Still adds up though.

That makes sense actually, I forgot the draw of pump/fans and a number of drives etc that added to it in my case.

Say 100W with a low power gfx and some drives, I think its feasible to build a lower power system to pull <50W for the resale value of q6600,mobo,8GB ddr2, 8800gtx as the prices are atm. That 50W saving 24/7 translates to about £60 per year. Plus you get the pleasure of tinkering, who can put a price on that?

I'm still running a Q6600 here too on a striker II extreme and I'm currently battling with it at the moment to get it stable at 3.4/3.5ghz.

Ps if anyone has any advice it'd be greatly appreciated, I have a post on the overclocking and cooling board ;)

I'm still running my Q6600. It's been overclocked to 3GHz and undervolted (.2v LESS than stock :D) since the day I built it about five years ago.

I recently built a nice new PC for a friend so I'm considering a new PC in the not-too-distant future :)

When I built the PC I put a Corsair HX620 in (it was the big thing at the time!) - Any reason why I shouldn't reuse that in a new build?

aye my mate is still using my old Q6600, proper fantastic processors, still copes with all the gaming and CAD related things he does no problems at all, cannot comment on how much of a good processor Intel made with that one, in-fact the whole Core 2 line was fantastic, much bigger leap than anything recently, it was Intel' reascension to top of the game if you will. :)

I recently upgraded from my q9550 to an i7 and the difference in games was amazing it was definitely bottle necking my 2x5870's, crossfire works now:D

my board takes ddr3 so have some of that now, got a new board and cpu but my q6700 does the job might sell the board and chip and wait for haswell
