Core 3 fails using prime!!

iirc your cpu is a 65nm cpu.
You have one of the higher end 65nm cpus but they overclock to similar speeds to other cpus such as an e6600 as the technology is the same - Your cpu only beats cheaper variants when not overclocking. Even the small overclock you have will require more volts in order to be stable.

What I said above can be easily seen with the i7s. Everyone buys the cheapest one as it overclocks to the same speed as the more expensive ones. The Extreme Editions usually have unlocked multipliers (not sure if the i7 EE has) but even if it does the max overclock will probably be the same as the cheapest i7 model.

Hope this helps:)

Fairly common for one core to be the weakest. The manufacturing process is variable, so the cores are all slightly different.

As for after only 5 seconds, it means your computer is very unstable instead of slightly unstable. Lower the fsb however much it takes to get it stable, then increase the fsb slowly increasing voltages to stabilise it.

Cheers guys, thanks for the info. This wasnt an issue to begin with, when I first oc'd the cpu it would run in prime no issues, then all of a sudden I was getting all sorts of crashes so I reset the cmos and overclocked it all again and now I have this issue, might just go back to stock for now then and save my pennies for either a new cpu or go for an 920i7 upgrade with the new mobo and ram!! Thanks again for the replies.

When l OC my Q6600 in Prime95 a core would fail so just increased the VID a notch at a time sorted that core out but another failed so increased VID again till it passed Prime95. VID in Bios ended up at 1.37500v(stock VID-1.32500v) due to voltdrop CPU-Z reads my VID - 1.32800v been rock solid ever since, so just try increasing your VID a notch at a time till it passes Prime95 watch your temps.

Cheers for the info and advice. I got very bored earlier on today so I played around with some settings and realised that if I enabled loadline calibration it would let me run prime stable on my 3.2ghz oc. So then I played somemore and got 3.45ghz but the core failed again, so im going to increase voltage like you advised, im a little worried about temps now though because this isnt the coolest of chips at the best of times and she is running at 68 degrees now under prime using coretemp on the 3.45 oc!! Any help there anyone, is that just to hot now?? Its all done on air with a simple freezer pro, was considering buying the corsair watercooling kit that is on oc at the moment.

Can you add extra fans to your case, l added one to the side vent and that dropped temp's by 4c, dont forget when your just gaming etc, your temp's won't reach that high. Running Prime95 your stressing your CPU for stability, you can always take it back to 3.3GHz, my Q6600 at 3.2GHz cope's with anything l through at it. My PC is in the living room even with windows open it gets very hot because we get the sun for most of the day. Last year my CPU temp's while gaming about AV=61c now with extra fan AV=57c, by the way l also use a ACF7 PRO. What do's CPU-Z say your core voltage is, me personally would not go over 1.400v.

My case is an antec 1200, it has 8 fans fitted to it. 7 are 120mm and 1 is the 250 big boy. It shifts some air. I have prime running now and cpuz whilst I write this and my core voltage is at 1.264 and my temps read 62, 61,56,53. This is on my 3.2 oc. I run my cpu fan on the asus q fan where the speed is regulated by temp/activity etc. I could run it at 100% and go for the bigger oc but for now im gonna stop with what I have I think. Thanks for all the help OLDPHART if you have any more advice fire away, cheers.
