Core i3 laptop for £400?

My parents want to get a laptop for christmas and have a budget of around £400, could possibly push to around £440.

I have used a Pentium D laptop before and it seemed to be so slow even just browsing the internet, it dont know if thats the case for everyone. So is it possible to get a i3 for this price?

Just found the Acer Aspire 5742 for £436, anyone had experience with this?

Most laptops are slow because of all the pre bundled stuff on it.

First thing I do is run msconfig, remove ALL startup items and all non microsoft services, uninstall any preinstalled anti virus and you are ready to go.

Acer laptops are very good but dont be expecting to play any games on that laptop.

I'm interested in this topic also, need a new laptop for the girlfriend for around this budget. The Toshiba Satellite C660-11K has an I3, but also has 4gb of ram and a 320gb hard drive and is £429, was considering the Dell inspiron 15R but the toshiba seems better value.

Cheers, never knew about msconfig before

and it wont be for games, just something that will be be good for a few years and wont get too bogged down.

Sorry I forgot to add install your own anti virus as the preinstalled ones are only trials.

Agreed I wouldn't touch Macfee or Norton with a barge poll and they normally the ones bundled with Pc's
