Core i5 2500K too hot.

Hey people,

I've got a Core i5 2500K, completely stock cooler and heatsink, not overclocked at all. I've noticed when I'm playing video games that it's getting really hot on all 4 cores - up to around 96C. Idles around 50-60C. I think that it's possibly because I bought a monster ATI graphics card and the air-flow is now a bit restricted, but I've also noticed that the heatsink isn't really, really firmly attached.

So, I'd like some advice on a new heatsink/cooler for it, if possible. The existing one attaches with some little white plastic things at the bottom, and is kind-of crap.

Ouch, those temps are high.

Something isn't right there mate..

Normal idle temps are around 30-40

Normal load temps at stock should be 60-65

Have you got any spare thermal paste to try reseating your Cooler?

Yeah that cooler you have is the intel stock cooler.

How much have you got to spend on your new cooler and what case do you have?

To be honest the stock cooler should be more than capable of keeping the CPU cool, especially if it's not been overclocked. However, do bear in mind that we have had some rather hot weather and this will contribute to increased PC temps.

Having said all that, 96c is far to hot as the max temp for Sandybridge CPU's is 95c before they start throttling down. I suspect that the stock cooler hasn't been seated properly or there just isn't enough airflow in and around your case.

What case are you using and have you checked that all fan intake and outtake vents are free from dust etc?

I've just added some Arctic paste to my basket. I think I should get a new heatsink and cooler too. My case is... I don't know :). Not a tower, not a mini, just average but there's not much room in there. Perhaps I should get a new case as well.

Yea, I also gave the heatsink and fans a good hoovering so it's not that. I think the heatsink is just not seated properly/firmly. I can't seem to make it firm either, so I think I should get a new one. Is there one like the stock, but with better build quality, or perhaps a higher heatsink? Don't want anything much wider as there's not much room in there.

With out knowing how much clearance your case has its not wright to say which cooler would fit we could say yeah get that one you buy it try and fit it and find it sticks out the side of the case.

Have alook about your case find out the maker go to their site and find it would be the best option as it would let us advice you more effiecently.

Exactly. :)

No way. I want it NOW (tomorrow). I think it should be OK to move the graphics card to the 2nd PCI slot, further away from the CPU. Should be plenty of room after that.

such as poor in holding the cooler/heatsink tight to the cpu

and the force needed esp on aftermarket coolers that use pushpins will badly flex the mb and could cause damage

its a far easier job to fit one with a backplate and will cool better

intel stock coolers are fine in an emergency

I mean such as... (please recommend one I can buy).

well it depends on your case, ram clearance

im using two top end coolers

the noctua d14 and the silver arrow

but Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom I hear good things about, but you need to makesure its not too tall for your case or else you wont get the side panel on,
