This is your problem :)

Obviously an aftermarket cooler is better, but the stock one should be fine at stock speeds (It was for me) if it's installed properly.
Also, what were you using to monitor temps?
 
OK, I just wanted to conclude this thread. I bought a Cooler Master, which has a huge heatsink and attaches with a back plate. I also did a bit of cable management to tidy things up.

When fitting the heatsink, I tinted the base of the heatsink (after cleaning it properly) and did a line on the CPU (I read that there's no difference between painting a line with the thermal paste or doing a pea, but I did a line anyway)

My temperatures went from ~96C with all 4 cores and the ATI 7970 under heavy load, to ~34C.

So, it's all sorted now. :)
