Core i5 or i7 for gaming?

on the MM you can get a 5850 for around £170 thats a few months old and in really good nik, hardly seems worth paying for something off here on a tight budget, considering in the next few months theyre only going to be getting cheaper with the 6 series coming out.

(i always buy all my parts no matter how small from ocuk though)

i didnt get any deals, i didnt have free postage at the time either, your best bet is to keep and eye on the daily deals, but with paying for postage you wont save much, if i where you id get everything you need in one go, hopefully some things you want will either be on the daily or week deals.

mine cost around £1300 altogether, i dont have a ssd but thats my next addition, my mistakes where buying things too fast and wanting to upgrade to something better a few weeks later, i had a 500w psu now a 700w but will need to change again if i want crossfire so i wish i had got the hx 850 right away,

Your computer will do CrossFire fine with a 700w PSU.

If we assume that you will be spending ~£250 on a graphics card in a months time (perhaps a 6800 series) then how does this spec look?

Please ignore the 5850 - I just wanted to put in a stop-gap graphics card that costs £250.

That build is an excellent suggestion. I can't see anything I'd do dofferently, except maybe go for an 800 series motherboard. But I do like then mboard you've chosen.

I find the idea of building my own PC fairly daunting tbh - I'm not the most patient or technically-minded of blokes :)

that being the case then i would suggest something like this.

just add your choice of keyboard and mouse and a wireless usb network adapter eg:
TP-LINK 300mbps High Gain Wireless N USB Adapter

a fully kitted out and overclocked pre built system with all the bits you want for around £1100, of course i would wait for the new 6000 series cards to see what they bring to the table.

Haha I was just perusing the OC machines myself bru mate.

This puppy: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-101-OE

With Win 7 HP ed. 64 bit, and the HD 5870, came in at £1254.72 (without a monitor) - nice machine, but possibly overkill for me?

Also, do I not need an internal wireless card in the machine itself?

When are the new cards announed? Is there a date that anyone knows of - as I'm gagging to get a new machine :)

I think the lower end 6 series are the end of this month/start of the next and the higher end just after.

Like most other people say on here theres not much point in waiting anymore because everything gets updates so fast these days there must be a cut off point where you just decide to buy something. Otherwise after the 6 series come out you might find yourself waiting for new cpu's, new ssd's etc. If youve got the money for the ultima viper and the benq monitor then just go for it, you will be set for the next few years atleast. The only change i would make is going from the 5870 to a 480 for the £34 difference.

Edit: I dont have a wireless card, just plug straight into my router.

I know that you can't ever keep up with technology as far as computeres are concerned - unless you are uber-rich of course! :) It may be worth me waiting a fortnight to see how the new cards are getting on. I certainly won't wait any longer than this. If the cards bear up well, I could possibly get OC to put one into the Viper (and it may improve performance slightly and not cost me an arm and a leg more).

I asked a question on another thread with regard to the 5870 vs the 480 and the concensus was that the 480 is the faster card. It is also, hotter and noisier, so I am tor in two as to which of the cards to go for. I was kind of hoping that the 6xxx series could sort the problem, by providing cards as fastas the 480, which run cooler and quieter!

My wireless router lives in the hallway due to stupid phoneline positioning. Therefore I require a wireless PC internet connection. Would the Viper or Dreadnought systems require a wireless card fitted (as I don't see them listed in the components)?

Also - how did you get the Ultima Viper link attached to the words in your post (#57) - I've often wondered how people do this?! :)

Great thread - I've been looking at an i3/gtx 460 system here for the past month but think I may go i5 now.

You could also look into HomePlug adapters instead of a wireless card - would mean if there were other network devices you wanted to hook up to the net near your PC you'd only need a switch rather than for them to support wireless too. I have a pair of Belkin HomePlug AV thingoes and still get 22-23meg at least through them (that's what my DSL syncs at), at the small cost of 3-4ms latency. They're allegedly 'up to 200meg' but I don't have anything else on the network to test with.

This is probably not cheaper but I have a strong dislike of wireless!
