I am thinking on get a Core I7 update for xmas and I was wondering if thier is any point spending the extra like 200 quid just for a speed bump? Can you not just over clock it to higher

+ 1, thats what i am doing, low end i7 and clocking the hell out of it.

people are getting 4ghz easily on air with these processor's, and i am planning on watercooling mine:D

Get the 920 and overclock.

got mine currently set at 3ghz using the software provided by Gigabyte (EX58-UD5 board here)

I know it has a lot more to give. :)

I can just about see the point of the X965 model (although not at the price premium), the i7 940 however seems completely pointless.

4ghz easily on air? :O That really appeals to me, hoping that the dropping dollar can push these + motherboards under 200£ for each coupled with a pound that's dropping, that would make them extremely cheap over here.

Think you got yourself a little mixed up. The pound dropping is making things more expensive over here.

we have seen the i7 extreme overclock only a bit more than the 920
imo its not worth the premium considering what the 920 can do!

From reading around, many are hitting or getting close to 4GHz with a 920, but hardly anyone is breaking this ceiling. The Extreme editions are going higher, but are typically topping out at 4.2GHz... so not much better.

Not much better? only better for someone who wants to break records, otherwise honestly whos gonna pay an extra 400+ quid just for a measly 200mhz? only worth it for people who have extreme phase cooling.. then you are spending a fortune more to get the most out of it.

My mate in college as just told me these will be phased out in a year...Is this true =/?

Not entirely, the end of next year "should" see the introduction of a 32nm version of the i7 (currently it's built using 45nm technology), but the architecture will stay more or less the same and the socket will be the same, so motherboards bought now should be compatible.

I wouldn't expect to see a new architecture for the next 2-3 years.

Well I whudnt be to worried on the processor in a year cause I will probs get the newest one then!

But If I spend like £300 on a motherboard I expect it to last me 2-3 years
