core of earth

A lot of heat in the core is due to residual heat but by no means all. Radioactivity Uranium>lead etc. is a well established and thought out theory. It helps confirm the age of the earth too. Simply put the if it was just residual heat the earth could only be a couple of hundred million years old not the 4.57 billion it actually is.

Aye, Lord Kelvin estimated the age of the Earth to be around 20-40 million years based on the time it would take a molten Earth to cool.

An Irishman called Joly estimated 90-100million years based on how salty the oceans were.

Oh no! not another question, how old is the earth and how old is man,

presumably man is 5000 years old or there abouts and the earth is at least 20 million years old

so the earth lives for 20 mill years at least with dinosaurs and wotnot at various times and man comes alomng and thinks god created him and the earth just last week.

oh dear

ok if you do know can someone tell me the consensus on how old the earth is and how old man is.

and thanks for the info on the thoughts about the earths core, its interesting, just shows though

ok sorry, found the age of the earth at least 4 billion years, now thats old, i think i'll go and have a bear and worry about simpler things.

Not sure Yogi would approve of your relaxation methods ;)

lol - you're way way off!!!!

4-5 billion years for the earth and about 200,000-250,000 years for man

he says its only a theory.

'Only' a theory? Does he realise that a theory is more than just a guess? Theories are backed up by observational and practical evidence. Here's another theory for him: mavity. Does he believe that one?

i've seen this a lot - the confused definition of the word theory.

this is from wikipedia:
In common usage, people often use the word theory to signify a conjecture, an opinion, or a speculation. In this usage, a theory is not necessarily based on facts, in other words, it is not required to be consistent with true descriptions of reality.

and

in science, a theory is a proposed description, explanation, or model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation. It follows from this that for scientists "theory" and "fact" do not necessarily stand in opposition. For example, it is a fact that an apple dropped on earth has been observed to fall towards the center of the planet, and the theory which explains why the apple behaves so is the current theory of gravitation.

well sadly i've done a bit of research on google and apparantly man could be 7 million years old max and the earth a good 4.5 billion (man is defined as someone who can walk upright and has smallish teeth)

Strangely enough i wasnt taught this at sunday school.

Now i understand.

Also some suoernova is something like 7 billion years old because when it exploded its light took 8 months to reflect of its gas ring which means it took 169000 years to get to us ... although i've probably got most of that wrong cos i found it mind blowing.

and when you search for this stuff you find a load of things about creationists trying to explain it all.

my mate is having a discussion about the core of the earth. he seems to believe that the core of the earth is empty. his reasoning, a tumble dryer, when it spins there is an empty space. he wont believe anything e.g. molten iron etc that science has taught. he says its only a theory. someone tell me how these theories were found.

I think your mate is making the mistake that he thinks the Earth spins.
It does spin but very slowly.
Its a trick question but ask him how many times he thinks the Earth spins in 24 hours.

The latest data and extrapolations point to the earth being 4.57 billion years old (to be precise ;) ), well so my lecturer said on friday.

And the current estimate for the age of the universe is about 13-15 billion years.

I think it's pretty amazing that the earth has been around for a significant portion of that.
