I have moved my PC around a bit today and added the GTX 280, overclocked the Q6600 to 3ghz via the stock cooler.

I ran core-temp and it states that all 4 cores are running at around 34c on idle - is this a pretty good temp for them? One seems to reach 37 but not much more than that.

They sound OK for idle temps, but load temps are what really matters. Give it half an hour of OCCT/Prime95 and report back :)

its aproaching it's safe limits there, a better Heat sink woudl be advisable if you wish to clock it higher

Cheers - no plans to clock higher than that with it, 3.0ghz seems to be my max right now. Guess this is all fine for what I want to do then which is play games and use the internet!
