Core2 Duo + Sony VAIO = will it work?

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if there's any reason why a new Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.67GHz (1066FSB) wont work in my VAIO VGC-RB60G. As far as I can tell, the computer has some OEM version of a 945 Chipset Mobo ('Prague'?). At the moment, the 2.8GHz Pentium D just aint cuttin it (which begs the question, will i really feel this upgrade or might it just be in vain?).

Thanks

Not all 945P mobo support C2Ds, it is down to whether your mobo has the right voltage regulator modules that support C2D's new power saving features (VRM 11 is required).

It is very unlikely for a OEM mobo with 945 chipset to support C2D unless the motherboard specifically stated so.

The bundle you suggested will work brilliantly but you need to make sure your case supports a standard ATX mobo because a lot of pre built systems come with micro ATX case and mobo.

In what? What do you use your machine for?

Media Center and gaming mostly, part of me wants to just wait a year or so and get an entirely new rig, but every time I find myself having to compromise in games I wanna run out and buy a c2d. I have an x1950 (8800s dont fit the case-doh!) and I think its really the CPU that's bottlenecking things.

So sounds like I will have to replace the mobo, and though Sony support have told me its a standard ATX case (I've been down this road before), I dont really believe them at all, how could I tell for sure if its ATX or micro ATX?

Thanks again

You could try the motherboard from the vaio in an old atx case if you've got one? Probably a much easier option than that but it's all I could think of...

If it's gaming you want then you will definately see a respectable performance boost moving to C2D and faster RAM.

A standard midi tower case should have 7 slots for expansion cards at the rear and the dimensions of a full size ATX case is 30.5*24.4cm, while the micro ATX should not be bigger than 24.4*24.4cm.
