Guess i really don't know much about Intel CPU's!!

My E2180 was recording high temps at idle; 55+

I then saw on here you have to put the thermal compound on the CPU then close the heatspreader down? Is that right? What i did was put the compound on the heatspreader!!!:rolleyes:

Do you then put the compound on the top of the heatspreader?

What a plebb!!!

I don't quite get what you're saying - the heatspreader is the exposed top of the CPU, you can't "close it down" - the clamp clamps around the raised part. You just put thermal compound on the top of the chip:

In this case, the raised part with all the text etched into it.

So you put the paste onto the bottom of the heatsink rather than the top of the CPU? It probably won't have made much difference to be honest.

The heatspreader is the metal part on the top of the CPU, not the bit with the fan on it - that's the heatsink. Is it the heatsink you're refering to?

No, the heatspreader comes with TIM/solder already on it between the core and the heatspreader. You don't need to do anything.

The heatspreader is glued to the substrate and soldered directly to the core. You won't be taking that off easily (you'd need a knife and heatgun) and if you do, it'll void the warranty immediately. You just put thermal compound on the heatspreader.

The Arctic Silver instructions just picture a CPU with the heatspreader removed to show you where the core lies underneath, just so you can see where you're meant to put the AS itself. You do NOT take the heatspreader off, for reasons which I've just mentioned.

Yeah you can't remove the heatspreader without damaging the core, so just apply a dab of thermal material at the centre of the heatspreader and then install the heatsink.

The picture in manual is a cut-away showing the orientation of the 'core' in the processor to give you idea which way to install the paste on the CPU spreader.
