Coin toss between the q6600 or the e6850.

it's going into a sugo01 with the fanless silverstone heatsink......the only thing stopping me going quad is the heat.

what sort of temps should i expect from each of them?

What are you doing with this PC. If it's an HTPC then quad might be worth it as you could be encoding / decoding high defition output etc etc. If it's just a browsing media player then the 6850 will be fine, but with the outlay being similar the extra cores are bound to come in handy 6 months down the line.

it's going to be used for lots of things. Movies, music....the 'odd' game and general use.

What are the temps like with the quad though?

Fine, if you're leaving it at stock? When you see people complaining about the temps it's generally those that are running them @ 3GHz and overvolting them. That said they're still slightly higher at stock but nothing to cry about.

do you have any figures to compare them?

Surely HD output doesn't need 4 cores?

From what I have read the difference at stock is around 10-15 degrees. With the Quad being the higher of the two.

So Q6600/e6850 idle 40/30 degrees, load 60+/45+

think i'll have to go 6850 then as the temps will be hotter in a fanless sugo....?

Fact is buddy, you've got a Quad Core at 2.4GHz or a Dual Core at 3.0GHz.

Even in single threaded applications, that Quad is going to give you more than enough power, not as much as the E6850, but enough that it's not going to affect you.

And when multi-threaded apps pop up, the Q6600 will destroy all the Dual Core range, no questions asked.

I'd recommend waiting for a G0 stepping though, less heat output on those.

You could always, pop a Zalman CNPS8000 in the Sugo, raise the FSB to 333 (giving 3GHz), and the Zalman is active cooling but silent so it won't affect temperature much.

it's just how long i'm going to have to wait.

I'm without a pc at the moment....doing my head in, although i know with it going in the sugo that the 95w version would help.
