Cork 'puzzle' - very frustrating

A friend showed me a very annoying puzzle with two wine corks. Apparently psychiatrists use it to see how mental you are (if you're mental, you destroy the corks in frustration, if you're not, you keep trying til you solve the problem).

I'll try and describe it:

1. Put a wine cork tucked in between your thumb and index finger, at the base of the 'v', one cork on each hand.

2. Bring your hands together and grab the cork in your left hand with the thumb and index finger of your right hand, and vice versa for the cork in your right hand.

3. Pull the corks apart.

They just get stuck!! I don't know how he did it!! I watched him do it really slowly and I still couldn't figure it out. The range of times he quoted for solving it was 30 seconds to 2 weeks, so good luck.

If you can understand my description, I'd be grateful if you could have a go. Btw, if you don't want to be frustrated for the rest of your life, don't even attempt it.
 
Unless I am doing this totally wrong, it took be about 2 seconds to do this with some batteries I had to hand - It could be that the diameter made it easier?

Exactly which way am I supposed to be holding the corks?
 
to be honest I have no problem putting things like that down calmly and admitting defeat, I can't find any corks at the moment, and considering the amount of wine I've been drinking recently thats very odd ... :(
 
Dude its easy.

1. Stick it in the V of both hands and hold both hands out with corks facing upwards
2. Rotate right hand 90 degrees so cork is facing towards you.
3. Grab the top and bottom of the cork in your left hand with your thumb and index finger of your right
4. You will now find the htumb of your left hand is next to the bottom of the cork of your right hand (It was the bottom in stage 1 anyway). Stick your thumb on the end of it.
5. Bring the index finger of your left hand around the left hand side of your corks and place it at the other end to your thumb.
6. Pull apart and vanquish your opponent.
 
Well i don't get it, i tried it with 2 packs of chewing gum, dont u end up with them interlocking so you cannot pull your hands apart?

Now I can show it to other people and frustrate the hell out of them...

I'll make you a video of the right and wrong versions if i can get my webcam working.
 
I know the trick well and have the solution stored in my long term knowledge.. its good for at the dinner table.
