I've read elsewhere that the older Corolla VVTI engines can use a lot of oil?

Mines a 1.4 2001 Corolla (just got it, see the "it's nothing special..." thread) and it'd be nice to know that this problem isn't actually all that common.

Any got any experience/good stories/tales of woe with these engines?

edit: 56500 miles approx on the clock

Well i know about Civic/VTEC engines.
They tend to drink a bit of oil now and then during the VTEC use, there the same kind of engine using variable valve timings etc

not with that particular engine, but i know the corolla, mr2 and celica 1.8 vvti early models had issues drinking oil - and also the pre cat in the manifold can crumble and get sucked back into the engine, causing worse oil drinkage!

my friends MR2 02 reg drinks oil like theres no tomorrow, he can never put enough in for it to register onto the dipstick...

i dont think his engine will last long, especially given the way he boots it from cold anyway!

Nickg the excessive oil drinking on the early 1.8s was also a sign of possible failure of the piston rings at some point soon - plenty of the early 1zz's have had this issue

So is it just the 1.8's? Or is mine one of these 1zz's?

(Sorry...know very little about Corolla's, and cars in general if I'm honest)

Looking around it looks like the engine in mine is the 4zz-fe which means I might be in the clear.
