Correct amount of sleep...

It varies wildly for me.

I can go to bed at 9pm and get up at 6:50am for work, one night, then stay up till 3 and still get up at the regular time without a hint of sleep deprivation.

One thing you can do is learn to blank your mind if you're laying there wide awake. It's surprising how actively thinking of nothing can make you fall asleep. I'm terrible for over-thinking something I need to do the next day etc, so I've fallen foul many times (of laying there for hours, awake), until I learned to "think of nothing".

Also, having a child has taught me to get as much sleep as possible, whenever possible.

Anyone else wake without an alarm the same time everyday? Within a few seconds and feel wide awake? I want to know if this is possible for an adult.

It is possible, 90% of the time i will awake between 7:15-7:25 most mornings even tho my alarm is set for 7:45.

I feel wide awake but i do tend to stay in bed and doze back off and feel worse for it at 7:45.

IIve just started a new regime, in bed by 23:00 hopefully asleep by 00:00.

Alarm set for 6:30, done this 3 times now and its enabling me to eat a proper healthy brekkie and make a decent filling packed lunch using fresh ingredients. Feeling tired in the evenings now as im getting up earlier, its just a way of shifting your body clock a few hours back.

I can get by on 4 or 5 hours, but tend to feel it late afternoon. Ideally 6-8 hours is a good nights sleep for me. Although I have still been known to have a wee nap in the afternoon if I'm finished work and have nothing to do.

Came here to post this, it's not getting the attention it deserves (even if it is stupidly large ;)). 90 minute sleep cycles, if you wake up in the middle of one you'll feel rough, but at the end of one and you'll be fine.

As for actual amount of sleep, well i give myself six hours (maybe a bit less) on a 'school' day, but when i don't set an alarm i go to bed at three or four and wake up at half twelve. There's no definite amount that you should be aiming for, not only is everybody different but there's all sorts of things to consider besides what makes you feel better when you wake up. There's all sorts of medical advantages and disadvantages of short and long amounts of sleep that you're better off just not worrying about quantity (well, within reason :p).
