Correcting English

my girlfriend corrects me all the time i ignore it but i think you've got to be very forgiving with english i mean the only ppl that actually speak 100% english are usually posh or rich or royalty. everyone has there own way of talking its simliar to accent so if you grew up in scotland your english would be slightly different than if you grew up in london .

What's wrong with what I'm saying? You just don't like it to be honest, if you and your girlfriend are going to have massive arguments that you need to "vent frustration" over because of something stupid like this then it's quite clearly not going to last.

I can't not stand people what don't talk proper.
You just need practice maybe :)

Although, it does make people sound like a complete helmet.
I correct certain people a bit too, but if it's annoying me (and they're training to be a teacher(!)) why the hell not?!

I have no issue with what you're saying except that it's not based in fact.

I never said at any point we have massive arguments - if you re-read the original post you'll see that I said she went in a huff. Hardly the same as a massive argument is it?

Please show me one relationship where both partners never irritate each other ever!

In which case what do you expect people to say other than "it's just a silly argument, get over it and stop whining."

So err.. it's just a silly argument, get over it and stop whining.

it's because you're bad English annoys her. Either you need to take her corrections on board and try to learn how to speak 'properly', or she needs to accept that you like sounding like a chav.
"you're bad English" ? heheheehehe

'you're' bad english? LMAO :)
Damn you got there before me :(
I have an observation that I would like to share. It appears to me that the comma becomes hugely over-used in these threads ........and, if we, were to read, these posts, with all, these commas, out loud, we would sound, rather a lot, like, Tony, Blair....

Is that ironic?
Colonic I think ;)

I can't stand it when people use poor English. There is no excuse for it, you're taught it in school and live in the country.

She was right, maybe if she keeps correcting you, you might finally learn?

If we rearrange your signature it becomes:

Paul, Keep it up Dawn. I guess that is one way to take the mind off smoking.

Sorry boss.

Back on topic then, Rapper do you think you and her could have a calm chat about how much it annoys you? Let her know, calmly, that it's a problem.

I've tried that a number of times, it doesn't work. She just can't help herself.

The Mad Rapper, am I right in thinking you object more to the corrections than the principle she's putting across that you ought to improve your English. Its making you insecure because she's in a minor way, saying she doesn't like something about you. Are you resisting because you feel she should accept you how you are?

In my opinion, this is a huge non-issue that could be resolved with a small compromise from you. Indeed perhaps she ought to accept you but to outsiders (I believe this is the vibe most of us replying to your thread share), its a logical thing for you to be the one making the compromise. Proper grammar is by no means a measure of a persons worth but it is a important life skill and will make you come across as smarter and more articulate. So I think you should suck up your pride and learn. Easy for us to say of course, but thats life. :p Indeed, I think this is in a round-about way, a very positive thing for your relationship.

Think of it this way, she might be trying to train up a few of your weak points to make you more suitable a role model for her son. She's committed enough to you that, perhaps without even knowing it; she wants you to act as the kids step-father in a manner perhaps more direct than it is now (I don't know the nature of your relationship with her and the boy).

Just my thoughts for you. ;)

Is she a teacher?

Or is it simply her trying to enforce correct English on her son? If so, pull her to one side and say you appreciate her doing it when all three of you are there and you'll make a conscious effort to improve, however, when you're on your own you wanna speak how you wants innit?

balls - Incorrect English is not good, try and learn/speak properly.

Thanks for that - you're completely right. I'll bear what you said in mind ;)
