Correupted Drive?

Last time Windows said a drive was corrupted a whole 50GB partition vanished into magnetic oblivion taking all my downloads with it! Never recovered them either :(

If I were you I would backup anything you want to keep from the drive Windows says is corrupt ASAP. If it is a partition that is corrupt I would be backing up the entire HDD.

Either way, once done you need to test the HDD to see if there is anything physically wrong with it. This can be done with the HDD manufacturers own utility which should be available on their website. Maxtor has PowerMax or MaxBlast as its now known I think, Seagate has SeaTools and so on.

If the HDD is fine physically then it would seem that the file system has gotten corrupted. This is probably due to Windows making a mistake somewhere or there was an unexpected crash that may have prevented Windows from writing to the HDD correctly. It can also be caused by a power spike in the HDD itself or the HDD losing power unexpectedly.

If it is a software issue, it can probably be fixed with a Scan Disk. Known as Chkdsk in WindowsXP.
