Corsair CX750M to EVGA SuperNova G2 - worth it?

It would help if you told us your spec. Generally though the G2 range is a much better quality psu but if you already have the CX750M I can't see any reason to replace it for a G2 750w psu. It's not as if you will get any performance gain or anything.

I've got an i5 3570k @ 4.2ghz, rx 480, 8GB RAM and a few hard drives. My main reason for replacing is that it's been making an annoying buzzing noise for a while now, is loud and is now out of warranty and occasionally my system crashes, and when I go into the windows crash recorder power is recorded as an isue. I was mainly looking as I found some really good prices for the 550w & 650w EVGA G2. In hindsight, 750w is certainly overkill for my specs.

The G2's are top quality units. They are built by Superflower and are based on their own Leadex Gold platform but have a different fan, longer warranty and no tacky led's. The 550w G2 would be more than enough for your pc. If you wanted to crossfire that RX480 at some point go for the 650w G2.

Ok thanks for the info. Just put my pc through some power calculators and:

Load Wattage: 453 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 503 W

Is that ~50w margin between recommended and the 550W G2 acceptable?

Those power calculator websites are not a reliable source of info when it comes to how much wattage is required. A 550W such as the EVGA G2 will be more than fine.

Also make sure you have the latest Crimson driver for the RX 480 as it fixed the power issue.

Power calculators are crap. There is no way in hell that you will be pulling 453w at load. That's more than my system and my 780 is more power hungry than a 480. The pc in my siggy pulls a maximum of 452w at the wall but only if I run Furmark and IBT both at the same time. Normal gaming use is anything between 122-365w depending on the game with the exception of Anno 2070 which makes the pc draw 422w. Idle power draw is only 68w. That's including the water cooilng pumps, several fans, two fan controllers, two water temp monitors, some led's and a overclocked cpu and ram.

At the end of the day, if it wasn't enough then I wouldn't have recommended it.

Ok, thank you.

Unfortunately the G2 is out of stock where I was going to get it, but an EVGA Supernova 550 W Gs Gold 80+ is in stock. I've read that its a slight step down compared to the G2, but is slightly cheaper and only 5 year warranty instead of 7. Have any of you used the Gs?

The GS is a Seasonic built unit and is still a decent psu, just not as good as the G2. It has a slightly weaker 12v rail than the G2 at 540w compared to the G2's 550w but is more compact at only 150mm long. There's a review here. Just for comparison here's a review of the 550w G2 which get's a full 10/10. I would be tempted to get the 650w G2 if the place that you were going to buy from has it just for the better quality unit plus the extra warranty.

The Corsair RMx 550W is a very good alternative. You get a 10 year warranty with it.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £94.85
(includes shipping: £9.90)

Thanks for that, I'll look into that psu. Major issue is that where I'm looking at the GS/G2 it's £20+ cheaper than that corsair psu. Ofcourse I can't mention that place though :S

The Corsair isn't worth that money when the G2 is running around at a much cheaper price.

The extra warranty on the lower wattage units might be worth it to some people. Also a month or so ago the Corsair units cost about the same. The prices are all over the place at the minute though.
