Hi there, OCUK!

In a couple of months I'll be heading to university and wanted to get a rig ready for when I go.
I've pretty much planned out what I want, but as for cooling I really don't know - I've never personally used any aftermarket coolers.
The Corsair Hydro H50 is currently on offer for £40 and I was wondering if it would be a good choice for cooling my rig

The setup would be round about the following:

Intel Core i5 2500K (definitely want to try and overclock it)
A P67 or X68 Chipset motherboard (I'm assuming P67 would be the better choice)
Nvidia GeForce GTX460 (One of the various 1024 GDDR5 ones available)
12GB DDR3 Corsair Dominator 3x 4GB sticks

I've read up somewhere that various after marketcoolers ( Moreso the massive heatsinks ) are bad on most boards for higher profile RAM such as the Corsair Dominator.

I've been hanging around here for a while but just recently registered to the forums, I hope someone can give me some insight on the matter.

Cheers
Ross

The X68 board will be used for the high end LGA 2011 socket cpu's which wont be out until then end of the year I think.

You need to look at the Z68 or P67 boards ideally with dual channel memory.

Thanks for the feedback, will the P50 be suitable for properly cooling? - It's going to be used for pretty much everything, but the most strenuous thing will probably be playing various games.

I'll possibly be able to get various Hardware when I'm in the states for a lot cheaper than in the UK, but there is various things I wouldn't particularly want shipped, the Corsair P50 being one of them.

Other things I plan on buying soonish is a nice 'budget' case, the Cooler Master HAF 912 looks like a good choice - help would be much appreciated, I've read various reviews for the hardware I've selected but more experienced users normally have better feedback.

The Corsair should be fine at keeping the cpu cool, even when overclocked.

Cases tend to more of a personal thing, nothing wrong the HAF, The CM 690 II liked below is another good case.

If your rig is going to be used as a game system as well have a look at the 5850 linked below which is slightly quicker than the 460.

The CM690 II was another case I was looking at, pretty much like the HAF912 minus the chunky plastic on the front bezel.

If I really could, I'd rather get a Nvidia card rather than an AMD/ATI card, in my experience NVIDIA is so much better for drivers and support, but if the AMD/ATI card is good enough for the price, I'd happily get it.

The video card would be something I'd most likely get from the states, purely due to the reduced cost, it would even enable me to get a card a few ranges higher than I would be able to use here and still be paying the same after postage but getting a much more powerful card.

I want the rig to try and last me the 4 or 5 years I'll spend at uni or at least have some expandability.

You might wanna order a better 120mm fan for the H50 as I had to do the same with my new H60 as it was just too damn loud for my tastes lol. The coolers are pretty good though and I'm happy with my H60
