Hi, wonder if anyone could help me.

I recently came by some Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200PT TwinX for £50 and have stuck it straight into my system which runs lovely now, however I am at best an inexperienced OC'er and would like to try and get the best out of this memory and CPU. I understand the basic principles of memory OC'ing but not really sure where to start. eg tras, trcd or CAS latency etc.

Also I have an Athlon64 3700+ Clawhammer (S754) with an Arctic Freezer 64 on an A-bit NV8 mobo which I have Overclocked slightly to 2.6ghz, does this affect the memory in any way due to the memory controller on the Athlon CPU? If anyone reading this has OC'ed the memory mentioned, what sort of overclock did you get?

Any help from your kind selves' would be appreciated.

If you're increasing your CPU speed then you'll also be increasing the speed at which your memory is running. If you've left your settings to AUTO in the bios, then it'll compensate for the increased memory speed by slackening timings or using a divider.

Brief description of a divider just in case:

A divider allows your memory to run at a fraction of your HTT speed, so a 5/6 divider would mean that with your HTT at 250mhz your memory would be at 250 x (5/6) = 208.3Mhz.

As you can see, this means you can push your HTT speed up, but keep your memory in check. Use CPU-Z to check your memory speed in windows.

Now if you want to push your CPU further, you may find you encounter instability, you can choose a divider that would make your RAM run slower, and see if that returns stability to your system.

Thank you for your reply. Most helpful.

I did notice that in CPU-Z when I was notching the CPU up the HTT speed was going up in line with memory frequency. Currently 218.2mhz and seems pretty stable. Temps all seem to be not much above stock.

Ran Prime for about 8 hours last night and everything was fine this morning.

How much improvement would I see if used CAS2 ram instead of the CAS3 ive got?

You'd see a nice little bump in performance, best thing to do is bench Super Pi 1Mb test and see what times you get at CAS2 and CAS3, that'll give you an idea of the difference it makes.

You may find CAS2 will make you unstable, but you could try giving the modules some more Vdimm to help that out :)

Thanks for that. I'll give it a whirl tonight when I get from work. Hopefully I'll get some favourable results.
