Currently Running a Silverstone Strider Gold Evolution Gold rated 850w fully modular, Now that's a mouth full...Giggidy, This one basically Clicky

Anyway a work mate of mine has the Corsair AX860i Platinum rated with black Corsair extensions cable kit etc...he wants to do a straight swap as he's a bit of a Silverstone fanboy to go along with his new Raven case, Silverstone AIO, Silverstone DAC's and Silverstone Headphone stand.

Now I've heard some nasty stories about Corsairs AX series not being that reliable and in some cases actually taking out an entire system due to a short.

I need the community's input on this one :)

It probably depends on how old his PSU is. Corsair used to be excellent for power supplies.

I believe they've since gutted the brand - selling cheaper, lower quality components at a presumably significant profit margin by exploiting the customer loyalty built up over previous years. I hope the income raised in the short term was sufficient to justify the damage done to their brand.

It's probably possible to find a review specific to his current model, in order to work out whether it's any good or not.

The old HX ones are in my opinion notoriously unreliable. I had two go pop on me (a 520 & its RMA replacement 650) Corsair RMA service is pretty good even though you have to send them to Holland. Switched to Seasonic & never looked back (Though my latest build for my Nephew is a Superflower GG HD550, Quite impressed for the price)

Johnnyguru gave it a 9.7/10. PSU isn't really a part you want to be flip flopping on for vanity sake. Should get your friend to mod a PSU shroud for case or something.

Summary

Three months ago we watched the AX1200i test almost perfectly, and show us what the DSP design had to offer. Today we watched the younger brother turn around and show its big brother up on a few occasions, and took notes in a few areas as well. Overall, this unit did everything it was supposed to do and smiled the entire way through. It took everything we had to throw at it without batting an eye. The only thing that could make this unit any better would be a lower price point. But with the added value of the Corsair Link software and the added functionality it brings to the table. A little higher price for these features and excellent performance isn't that far out of line.

The Good:

Fully modular.
80+ Platinum Efficiency.
Excellent Voltage Regulation.
Excellent Noise/Ripple suppression.
Superb build quality.
Silent fan mode up to around 20% load.
7 Year Warranty.
The Bad:

Not a damn thing!
The Mediocre:

Still has the mixed flat / sleeved cables.
A little pricey, but easily overlooked.

No more or less reliable than any of the other big manufacturers - if you dig hard enough you can find nasty stories about any manufacturer.

Have a quick look at http://www.jonnyguru.com/ reviews of corsair units for the last few years - think the lowest any of them scored is about 8.3/10.

I have had an AX860i for 18 months (i think!) - no problems. Also an HX850i for 6 weeks no problems. Not sure if that helps but anecdotal. I've had Corsair, Seasonic, Fractal Design and Antec in the past.
