Corsair PSU's Really That Bad ?

So i'm still using Corsair HX650 Professional Series HX 650W ATX and not had any problems for years with it.

Should I be looking to upgrade this?

Is 650w enough to run a GTX970 card, gigabyte z87 oc motherboard, i5 4650, 16gb ram, soundcard and fan controller, or do I need more power and something more reliable?

Bit paranoid now lol.

I should mention I bought this early 2010. Were these "crap" then or is the corsair quality build thing a recent development. I thought I had made a good choice at the time.

HX 650 were Seasonic OEM iirc (I think) so you'll be fine, it's from when they weren't crap :D

that's reassuring if true.

Is this enough power to run my system overclocked, as its first time i'm putting a decent gfx card in. Maybe i need to buy one with higher wattage.

I have the AX860i and been running it for well over a year and its as silent as the day I picked it up. Spends most of its time in fanless mode and only kicks the fan in when under real load, the other 2 PC's in my house both have corsair PSU's in them and are over 18 months old and running just fine.

I had AX850 Gold, And now my 4770k 4.3 and 980 system runs off a AX860i i snagged new for £130 ish back when they were doing recalls on whine. It actually seems to run fanless like the Gold most of the time and i do not hear any whine so far. Very pleased actually that it can run silent.

The more powersavings we get, Eventually it would mean a passive £126 psu which is a good deal. Right now im not fussed at all by all the Superflower hype.

It isn't hype. The Superflower/EVGA units get recommended for a reason. You only have to look on Jonnyguru if you want proof of how good they are.

Until 6 months ago I have been using Corsair PSU's for years. I have built other machine for friends and family with no issues.

My nephew is running HX 650 at the moment, which used run my machine 24x7 for the past 4 years.

It might be that I have been somewhat lucky over the years, as I even used a QTec 550w PSU with no issues and we all know about their reputation

I've been using a CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 650W since mid-2009 and it has worked fine throughout several rebuilds.

That said, I plan on replacing it this year simply because it's been over 5 years by this point. Perhaps I've never had a problem because I never overclock and keep it reasonably dust-free in a cool environment.
