Corsair RM650 -just died...

Nope
...the Corsair RM series were released in 2013 and are 100% made by CWT. One of the reasons behind it was because CWT could build PSU's far cheaper than Seasonic, but with that came the negatives of quality and reliability.

I hope you didn't mean that we basically just picked an existing CWT model and slapped our name on it. If that's what you're implying, then I'm afraid that is incorrect.

All our PSUs are ALL design from ground up by our own Corsair engineers in conjunction with their counterpart engineers from that particular OEM, in this case CWT. Once a design is prepared and a platform is developed with compliance to our spec, we will then proceed into production using their resources, also known as "outsourcing". So ultimately, putting our name on a particular PSU, really makes it our PSU.

And btw, CWT is a pretty reputable OEM for a lot of big players in the PSU market (including Antec) so to call their units cheap.. and question their quality and reliability is a little misguided. Our HX/i and previous TX models were all CWT, both series are well recognized PSU lines, and I don't think they are cheap.

Bryan Kortez - I think it was just unfortunate that you got a bad unit from the get go.. We can always provide assistance if you need to get a replacement.

I have put a RMA in with your team. So I should be in with the unit today or tomorrow.

Something I'm not happy about with this PSU, is how tacky the connectors feel. They really don't like plugging into the PSU or components. You have to put a fair bit of pressure to get them to click in place.

Thanks Bryan. You can send me the ticket # as well that way I can make make sure that it gets top priority.

I agree with the cables, they connectors are really hard to plug in. We have brought this up to our PSU Product manager and he is aware of this particular concern and is working to update the cables for better fitment. Still in progress so I don't know when that'll get implemented.

Of course Greybeard, CWT have a place in the market, Antec did use CWT for some models in the past, but none of our current line up are made by CWT. Antec choose to go with Seasonic and Delta Electronics for all of our range except for with just 1 current model (3 wattages in that model) being from FSP.

I'm not saying CWT is a bad OEM, there are far worse options out there but CWT is not favoured by a number of people.

The perception that end users had was not great when Corsair switched from Seasonic to CWT initially; starting with the CX400w which was made by Seasonic, it had a single 30A +12v rail giving a 360w of power via that rail but then you changed to CX430w which was made by CWT which only had a 28A +12v rail which only gives 336w on that rail. It was a decision which gave a negative view of CWT - is that justifable? Not my place to answer.

Gaaaaaa. Pretty sure my RM650i went bang this morning. I pressed the main socket switch, didn't touch the PC, and there was a loudish bang, it sounded as though it came through the speakers. But anyway, since that, the PC won't power on, nor are there any motherboard lights or USB power.

I'll take it out later to give it a test. How do we go about doing the "paperclip" test with a PSU with a 0db feature?

I've only had it for 8 months. It was an RMA replacement from a much older Corsair PSU. The RMA process with Corsair was smooth and problem free.

I know I'd get the answer from Corsair but until I confirm that the PSU has bust I'll wait before contacting them... but would my RMA process be affected in any way because it is an RMA of an RMA?

Might be worth having a look through the fan grill and also doing a sniff test to see if something has fried. If something has gone bang, then I would consider the PSU dead.

If you've got a fan you can hook up to a molex connector, then you can see if it's outputting power when you do the paperclip test.

Ahh of course. Duhhhh. Connect a fan to it! :D I'll try then once I get home. Nothing smelt funny at the time, although I didn't shove my nose into the grill.

Good old CWT quality :)

Such a shame Corsair decided to move 90% of their PSU range to CWT (Crap-Wielding-Tatt)
Yup, makes it hard to recommend them anymore when there are, at the same price point much better units.

No beeps or anything, nothing off the LED post either. My cpu and ran is fine, I've put it back into my old setup and it works. PSU is dead for sure. I've tried using my atx bridging tool to see if it will power just fans, and it won't.

I've only had the PSU about 2 weeks so I'm taking it up to overclockers with the motherboard for testing Friday/Saturday.

I'll see if I can get a refund instead of a new corsair unit then. Do the super flowers have zero rpm at low load?
The fully modular do with the the 550W on sale now for £68 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/supe...lus-gold-power-supply-gunmetal-ca-048-sf.html. I have the same in a different colour and even with the fan on unless I put my ear next to it it's barely audible.

Not 100% sure about super flowers, but EVGA G2 (rebranded super flower) doesn't have zero RPM , however the fan spins so slowly it makes literally no noise anyway until it gets over 600W used (on the 850W model). I am glad I got this PSU, a great purchase.
The 750 and 850 models do.

Well my RM650X has blown. Got nothing from the paper clip test and taking it out of the case uncovered a rattle. Green pieces fell out and upon peering through the vents with a torch I discovered a green capacitor with pieces missing. RMA time.

Sounds like a cap exploded then. Caps do tend to explode and go bang when they fail.

If it's in warranty, then definitely RMA it. I believe Corsair may now have a UK handling address. Otherwise, it's the Netherlands.

Funny experience, I think its all okay now though...

Got a response to my RMA ticket saying they will send me a prepaid postage label. And then in the same email I was given an option to upgrade to Express RMA.

I received the label on July 4th and posted it back to them on that day. I tried to upgrade to Express RMA the following day as they were closed for independence day celebrations. On the 5th I was told that Express RMA isn't available in the UK but I could send it to the Netherlands. I said I had already received a prepaid label at which point the guy seemed to change his mind and offered me the express option and took my cash.

He then updates the ticket asking for me to disregard the previous prepaid label and he will send me another one. There has clearly been some confusing by this point. I'd already sent the PSU!

Anyway, I ring up again to query this and I get my Express RMA money refunded.

Anywayyyyy. Today I receive a replacement PSU from the Netherlands. Lets hope its only the PSU that went bang.

The EVGA G2 550w would likely do you fine, and it is very well reviewed and comes with a 7 year warranty. They are also quite cheap atm (around £70) if you look around. I would recommend one, very quiet.

well my ax1200 is giving me grief. anyhow rma is in and aproved, i asked if they could send me a label in the post as i dont have a printer"sorry sir we cannot do this" i even asked them if i have to pay to send it back. they replied"ofc you do we will then pay to send a new one back to you" I asked is it not possible for them to send aprepaid lable as it will cost a fortune to send back as it is very heavy. again they replied" sorry sir we cannto do this". i even asked if they coudl do a courier exchange. a lot of companies do this nwo including mobile phones again"sorry we cannot do this" i am not happy and not impressed, i will have to be without my pc untill they return the new one to me, whcih i bet will take an age,i bet in the morning when i send mine off it will cost around £25-£30.

Don`t get me wrong i love corsiar products i won quite a lot but still...

I did not think we was allowed to be out of pocket in these situations.
Any response Greybeard
