I see these old classics are on Steam now... the II are not any good iirc, but I loved Art of War, although the AI had to be manipulated by some mod to do things properly.

However it was the first game that had huge battles that I remember... graphics not amazing, but good at the time... plus loads of units and online it was glitchy but when you got a good game it was worth it.

Anyone else play them?

I remember on the old school cossacks that i had issues even running it on xp i think, fixed by renaming the video folder (if you cant get it to even load atleast)

I had several douzen recordings of 60 minute peace-time games years ago.

You upgrade your economy, mines, get to the 18thC, use the market double-trade exploit and mass 18thC dragoons since they owned everything else. With all the lag I usually got 70-100 dragoons when the fight began and 2 18th century barracks.

The best player I've ever seen managed to get 4 18th century barracks once by 60 minutes using fishing ships.

Cossacks is easily the best RTS game ever made.

I played the original Cossacks (only offline) far more than I care to admit. I've rarely played a game where I could "accidentally" lose five or six hours so easily, thinking I was making progress on a particularly tough level, only to fail as earlier decisions came back to bite me.

Even as I type there's a little bit of me itching to replay some of the levels I never quite managed to beat on Hard.

Cossacks II was a big disappointment to me. It felt like a completely different type of game. I tried, but they'd just made it too complicated for me to enjoy.

I remember Ukraine being tough early on with those Cossack horsemen and their wild swords swirling around... but once you could get out the horse riflemen into a good formation you could stop them

Things like putting your pikemen into a square and that cannon grapeshot that raped whole lines stand out to me.

Ukraine was weakest early on ! It's mid to late-game where they get unbearably strong. The serdiuk riflemen are lethal once they reach maximum damage and register cossacks train quickly.
Register cossacks alone owned the Europeans by mid-game.

I see American Conquest is up as well which I thought was amazing at the time.

American Conquest was never much good. The slowest unit takes 4 hours to cross a huge map apparently, not to mention heavily garrisoned buildings are almost invincible and can only be destroyed by said slow unit.

.

Oh, I just remember those swirly swords rushing at me and seeing my men get chopped up.

Might get it to revive memories if it hits the sales.

The originals used to have the dreaded Starforce on them, at least the second one anyway. Does this get taken out if it's now on steam?
