What are the charges of importing a b.new bike from EU to the UK? Considering UK is a part of EU there's no VAT or duty charges?

So far from my calculations:

£150 - Transport to my front door.
£??? - Adjust the headlight so it doesn't blind other road users.
£??? - Registering the bike and since its b.new no MOT is required for 3 years, right? :)

Am I missing something?

Won't be a simple case of adjusting headlight, UK headlights dip to the left, EU will be opposite.

Insurance will be more due to having to declare as an import. Also possible warranty issues.

And you still have to pay VAT, if you buy one in the EU I think you pay that countries VAT rate, then declare it as an import to HMRC, pay UK VAT and then claim back the EU VAT you paid.

The savings surely aren't that much? May as well just buy a year old bike!

Also, how are you going get it from where you buy it to the UK? You can't ride it until it's registered, and to register it as new it has to be new, not a few months old or previously registered.

Well the price in the UK is around 5799, looking at the current currency exchange the same bike b.new will cost me 4358 abroad, the company I used before for transportation will charge me between £100-150. That's of course from my place abroad to UK front door. ;) So no need to register it or ride it back.

The warranty...

Q8: Do I have to take my Yamaha product back to the selling dealer for warranty repairs?
No - although perhaps advisable, any authorised Yamaha dealer for that particular model, is able to carry out warranty repairs.

Saving around £1000 seems worth the hassle, don't you think? :p

Edit:

So...

£150 for transport from abroad to my house.
£131 for UK legal headlight

Then there's the question of Tax and Insurance, I'll try to get estimate figures on monday.

Or you could buy a nearly new bike for the same money - I mean lets face it's it's 2nd hand the moment you take it outside.

£4900 for one a year old with 2800 miles, but with the akra system, and a few other extras. There's 6 month old bikes with under 1000 miles on there for under £5000 too. or look for a pre-registered new bike.

Another - brand new, unregistered for £5249 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-MT07-ABS-/181718397931?hash=item2a4f42b3eb

It's not worth the hassle IMO, unless you're saving a hefty chunk, i.e. a couple of grand minimum.

Generally an unofficial import won't be covered by the manufacturer warranty - you'll see dealers selling these who have their own warranty on the bike, and require it to be serviced by them etc. So if you imported privately, chances are you'd have zero warranty.

Yeah true, I just thought I could buy a new bike within my budget. If not, buying 2nd hand I can spend less and use some of left over cash on mods.

Insurance will be more due to having to declare as an import.

If the model of bike is readily available here it will have no effect on the insurance, I say that as some one who's had imports in the past courtesy of a Nottingham bike shop that used to specialise in EU imports.

So without VAT it would be £3478, then with UKs VAT ot'll be £4173 that's for a 2016 ABS model. I could argue the price whilst paying with cash and get it down to 3.8-4k Inc. 20% VAT

Why don't you just save up for a few more months? You're more likely to get a better deal in the winter anyway.

it means any authorised Yamaha dealer in the uk for a bike bought in the uk
it doesn't mean from any country.
most if not all main dealers hate grey imports and wont touch them.
