Cost of leaving a 10W device on ALL YEAR...

Anyone know cheapest place to get one of those plug in energy monitor things? Would be interested in having one just to test the sockets where stuff is plugged in to check the standby power draw and the 'in use' power draw.

British Gas (was) giving them away free by just filling out a form (tick the box to say you have a person over 75 in your house or get it sent to your grandparents.

You also get a 6 socket remote controlled extension which means when you put your tv into standby it will switch off every else plugged into that extension but when you want to switch them back on, just press standby on your remote and they all come back on. Great idea really for people too lazy to switch off at the wall.

yes just turn off the standby connection part that's the lowest consumption then. To get lower than that you would have to unplug it when not in use :)

The main WiiConnect24 setting is just the connection itself which it will only kick in when you run something that wants to use it.

I can't see that setting? "Standby connection"?

They go for around 10 quid on ebay

just search for power meter

I feel evil now - I leave 2x500W servers on 24/7 (But I dont really have a choice)

Just because they have 500w PSU's in doesnt mean they use that much each - in fact I'd be very surprised if they ever did.

This Raid5 system I'm on with 5 hard drives and a Q6600 idles at 162watts, even under load it doesn't go much over 250.

Thanks for that.

Interesting note, you DONT need to be a customer to get the free stuff. Also, you dont need a valid email address, so presumably if you're NOT a customer, you'll get bombarded with crap asking you to join.

My PC is left on all day every day because I download over night, the monitor goes to sleep after 20mins of non activity though and my other devices are all low drain when the system is idle anyway so it's no real biggy.

Math's not a strong point then.

Punctuation not a strong point then :p

Sorry :o

So, in summary - 1W = just over £1 per year, assuming 24hr/365 day usage?

So if your house electricity bill comes to £400 a year, that means (on average) your house uses 400W?

Interesting!

Worth if for the £60 of freebies. I got mine a couple of months back and have yet to receive any junk mail from them though or phonecalls.

The reason BG give it away free is that it contributes to the green targets they have been set. Npower offer a different scheme as do a few other companies. If they don't meet the targets the fines are much larger then the loss on giving away a few products.

The thing BG want more than anything with that offer is your name and address simply to say "hey we provided that household with energy saving products thats a point to us" even if you are a customer or not
