Cost of Living - Shrinkflation is speeding up at an alarming rate

most the weight is probably water too since rice weighs almost nothing dry
usual ratio is 1part rice and 2 parts water.

220g of microwave rice then is probably around 73g rice and the rest water with a few grams of flavouring
Must be literal penny pinching per packet cutting from 250g to 220g, I bet most the money is saved in the packaging if it gets smaller...
Most milk comes in a clear coloured top. My dad worked in food packaging and he said the manufacturer of the milk tops must have saved a couple of quid per 1m tops. If 6.5bn milk is sold a year, that will be just £6k a year saved on not using coloured milk tops....

probably lost 6k a year to other customers who wanted to buy milk that still has coloured tops for the same price from a different supermarket or whatever

Green top for me

I know we’re pushing towards less waste, but not sure I agree with this tbh.

Never bother with use by dates myself.

However, I think they're leaving a best before date on and you do need to have some idea how long it's been sat on the shop shelf.

We saved over 300k a year on cream waste at a place that makes cakes etc. Reducing food waste is a hot topic now with margins getting ever tighter.

Did we see any bonus for that 300k saving? Did we heck. :P The people above us took all the credit!

The whole food shrinking has been going on for years though. It is just people do not notice it because they either decrease weight by small amounts or with multi ingredient processed foods to fill the weight up with the cheapest ingredient to the max tolerance and the most expensive ingredient to the min tolerance for the spec of the product.

Most of our milk is only in the store for 2 days.

Milk in corner shops - about a week plus got rubbish dates on them. Plus seen them get milk deliveries and sit in the hot sun for a few hours. Whereas ours goes from chilled truck to walk in fridge in a minute

They probably have some easy code on them.

Does anyone know what day of the week Aldi and Lidl start their week with? Their dates on produce is the week number and the day. So it’s the 23rd week. Stuff in their stores will say as an example 2404. I just get the biggest number i can get

Does anyone pay attention to whats on milk cartons? Everyone will use their noses, literally, if it smells off its off and it goes down the sink if it doesn't smell and doesn't taste off am I going to tip it down the sink because it may have past an arbitrary date stamp? No. So much depends on where it was stored how cold your fridge is etc. Some things can't be detected so easily but milk is straightforward.

No but everytime I've bought milk from lidl it goes off in a day or two the "big" supermarkets last a week or more so I don't bother anymore

Great if you have a good working sense of smell, etc. - when I had COVID a few months back took nearly 3 months for my sense of smell to properly return.

I find a use by date handy as well as a reference I can adjust my use around as well.

Issue is you don't know how long it's been on the shelf for, I often find milk with dates a week apart on the same shelf. Milk in Aldi also seems very short life compared to the other supermarkets.
This

I do a weekly shop so want the milk to last all week, not a few days.

All this cutting waste by removing dates just screws the customer to increase supermarkets profits.

My partners nursery obviously gets it's milk supplied, so any excess and she brings it home. I've no idea what they are sending her, but for the last few months it's literally going off after a day or two if you're lucky, a couple of them have been off on opening!

You add water when using veg in air fryer? I havent been doing so as I am not sure its ok or not in an airfryer, but veg comes out a little dry without it.

Maybe if the government had kept up milk for children in school they would be less addicted to other crap and the dairy industry would be less monopolised by the supermarkets.

Recently introduced to BOB milk JS had a case with yellow tickets-65p-2L... apparently has same fat as skimmed(which is like water - horrible) but does indeed taste like semi-skimmed,
if the milk goes off before we think it should we'd take it back, as we have done for cream in the past.
