Cost of running pc 24x7?

If it's drawing an average of 200W, that's approximately 1 unit every 5 hours, or 5 units a day (1 unit = 1KWH, the amount of energy used by a 1KW device in 1 hour).

At current electricity prices, you're looking at 1 unit costing approximately 14p.

So 70p a day.

surely it depends on what its doing though?

I leave mine on downloading sometimes, but surely that doesnt use as much power as when im running 2 copies of EVE and my web browser email? I know the romm gets a lot hotter when im doing the latter.

aint there a way to tell how many watts your drawing? i shouldnt be to bad, LCD screen, seasonic psu, crap gfx card (no fan), barton cpu undervolted (slow fan), memory undervolted, north bridge undervolted, no drives plugged in

nice n quiet and cool :D

I don't leave mine on for more than 24hours.

The only exception is when im downloading torrents ;)

Mine goes on about 6pm and goes off at about 11pm,

Does your pc wear out faster if you leave it on 24/7 ? or not..

Ive always found my graphics cards die on starting up the pc.. so maybe 24/7 is the key to survival :D

I'm using an epia m6000 computer, with 1 120gb hard drive, and the whole rig uses less than 50W. Around half the power of a normal lightbulb.

used to leave mine on for weeks at a time, but i only have it on when im using it or need to download something over night

Quite the opposite, if I recall correctly.

Starting up and shutting down are the two most stressful times for computer hardware, I believe.

Yep thats what ive been let to believe aswell, this is what ive been told anyway that because some of the metal stuff is so small, constant hot and cold dosent do it very good? but then again constant isnt very good on our elec bill
