Just phoned these and asked for a quote for 4 tyres for my rover 25 SI 1.4 petrol...they came back with £400?

This will be the first time that I've bought tyres and I'm not really sure how much I should be spending.

Did they tell you anything about the tyres? £400 for good quality tyres isn't necessarily extortionate but if they're rubbish then it is. Unless your wheels are an unusual size though that seems a little on the high side for a Rover 25 at first glance but I'll admit to not knowing too much about it.

What's your current tyre sizing?

On your current tyres there should be some figures along of the lines of this: XXX/XX/RXX

My local Costco only stocks Michelin.

Yep. If you want Michelin, Costco are usually cheapest (by a long way). They are very good tyres too. They are excellent for fuel economy and grip, and they last a very long time.

£400 for 4 tyres on a Rover 25 doesnt sound like the cheapest by a long way to me. The better Michelins are good but the Michelin Energy is not a very grippy tyre at all.

Not that great, can get Toyo Proxies or Falkens for £75 a corner for mine. Which are 17s, assuming bigger than your Rover. But yet not always cheaper.

Costco also now stock Continentals.

Last time I popped into my local branch they had Continental Contact Sport 3 (225/40 Y R18) for £130 inclusive.

Well I found some Arrowspeed tyres at Kwik Fit - £200 for 4 inc fitting.

I'm hoping to keep the car for another year, maybe two so I don't particularly want to spend £300-400 when the car's only worth £750-1000.

No, no no. Don't do that.

Post the tyre size, we'll suggest some low cost yet not crap tyres.

How much you spend on tyres and how much your car is worth are two totally unrelated things.

Sounded very steep!

I'd probaly be looking to spend around £60-70 per courner on a car like that.

Though I guess it depends on how you like to drive. If you're sensible and don't ever push your car you shouldn't really need a super grippy tyre. If however you chuck it around round abouts then it's probaly a wise investment.

This isn't to say you should buy **** tyres if you don't drive spirtedly as in the event of an emergency you still want decent levels of grip for stopping purposes.

Just sounded like what they quoted you for was a bit overkill.

Go here:

You will notice Continental Premium Contact 2's for £60 each. This gives you two options:

a) Order from Camskill. This will be £250 delivered. Then pay a local tyre place £10 a tyre to fit and balance them. For £290, fitted, you've got decent tyres.

b) Use this price to haggle on this tyre (It's probably the best price/performance ratio at this money - Pilot Exaltos are probably better but not by enough for your needs to justify the extra £60 for 4 tyres) with local fitters. Aim for under £300.

They also have Toyo Proxes T1-R's for £40 each - you could go with those if you want as well. Same idea applies - order from them or use them to get a better price elsewhere. The Toyo is probably the cheapest I'd go on that list, cant see anything decent for less.

Good idea

Arrowspeed are just junk. Cant go wrong with the continentals :)

tbh it doesnt matter if you cant get them under £300, as long as you know how cheap it can be done on-line - you can weigh up the cost of being able to have them fitted there and decide if £305 or whatever - is worth it.

I've just ordered some Toyo T1-R from camskill for my mr2 with funny tyre sizes and that was only £260. And £20 fitted and balanced is the most I've ever paid for 4 tyres.

Hope T1-R are decent, I couldn't get any other tyres in my size - stupid jap crap :(

£15 more than Camskill.

Surely, on a like-for-like basis they are £2.50 more than Camskill and if you get them from Camskill you have to drive them down to the fitters.

And then Costco do a rather nice warranty on punctures that actually covered you rather than pretending to cover you.

Interesting to know they do Continental as well though as they are usually slightly cheaper than Michelin.

Costco is a very misunderstood place. They do sell stuff cheap, it's just that it tends to be top-end stuff so you can always get something cheaper elsewhere. And it's not always so cheap that you'd drive 80 miles out of your way to get it.

If Costco quoted you on Michelin tyres, they quoted you the most expensive option that Michelin do. It's the Costco way.

I liked the T1-Rs on my MR2...
