Costs of registering a website?

what annoyed you about 1and1? been with them 2 years and not had any problems to be honest

Basically their lack of customer service, their confusion due to lack of communication between departments, their inability to reply to an email, etc.

I had 9 domains with them, the first one was setup around 4 or so years ago and i had no troubles until i wanted to transfer the registrar to my new providor (register1), and they would keep stalling and stalling until i had nearly given up hope. Over 40 emails were sent, of which they replied to around 3, around 10 phone calls were made to their transfers department, i followed all their instructions to the tee and the transfer took around 5 weeks to complete - which is an incredibly long time imo for a bloomin domain transfer. Now i have 1 domain with them, and when i feel like having a stressful month or so i'll transfer that to register1 too :) :p

Just my experience.

Sounds annoying. But, that is when you were leaving, so the problem was with that department. How did you find them during the time they were your provider? Excluding your bad experience when trying to leave.

Just out of interest, as I work for 1&1, do you know what the exact hold up or cause of the problem was? Generally when transfering a domain to another provider there isn't too much to do from our end. If we receive a request from another company to take control of the domain, provided there isn't a lock on the domain & the verification checks out, the request gets approved.

I realise how easy it should have been as i have transferred many domains from providors before, but 1and1 have been the slowest in my experience - with the rant i posted earlier being the worst one. To me it seemed like a lack of anyone wanting to take responsibility for the task and just accept the transfer. I had unlocked the domain and went through the cancellation site as requested on the very first day of my 5 week wait, but people would always tell me i need to unlock the domain, and i need to go to cancel.1and1.co.uk and cancel the domain, etc, etc, etc - which i of course had already done many many emails and phone calls before. It just got incredibly annoying, the minimum amount of time it took to transfer a domain from 1and1 was 6 working days.

The problem seemed to be with several departments just not knowing what they are supposed to do, i spoke to a few people in their transfers department, some in their customer support dept, some who sounded like they were from the US, some from India. Nobody would just click the button to accept the transfer.

During my hosting with them i hated the webmail, hated the downtime and missing emails i got every so often, hated the slow control panel, and the only time i did phone up to try and resolve my email issues nobody ever knew what to do and i would be bounced between departments. One guy (sounded American) just said to me "Loads of our emails go missing, theres nothing we can do, why don't you just signup for a Hotmail account?". That's when i started transferring domains. Un-ba-leave-a-bloody-ble.
