Lightwave (a 3D rendering package) even had clustering support way back when it was onlyh available on the Amiga. Although they called it a ScreamerNet then. Loved that name
how complicated would it be to set up something like this? would you need to be an absolute pro? say you bought 10, 25 quid celeron D's at 2.56ghz or whatever, thats around 250 quid for 25ghz+ of processing power, albeit the rest of the parts would crank up the cost to well over 1k but still, for that amount of power it seems cheap.
Essentially you would need specially software telling the program about the oodles of power available. If the program or game is only written for a single core, it's not going to benefit from 10 x CPUs. You could technically run 10 instances of the game though.
So the answer is yes they could, but it wouldn't really benefit the home user.
