Could anyone help me with overclocking some of my kit? i7 d0 920

Hi guys, I have tried reading through some guides but can't seem to get my head around this whole overclocking business.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a guide using prety much exactly my hardware that I could try and follow?

I Would like to get to around 4ghz if you think that would be possible. I spent a lot extra on good overclockable kit and feel stupid not utilizing it!

I am running:

  • i7 d0 920
  • evga x58 tri sli mobo
  • 6gb ocz reaper 1500 1866mhz ram
  • Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler (Socket LGA1366)
  • 2x asus 4890 gpus
  • antec 1200

I would also like to oc my 4890s but have no idea where to start and cant seem to find a guide for the asus ones.

I really appreciate any help given. If anyone could help run me through some of it via msn I would gladly send them a few beer tokens!

Thanks that video was quite usefull but I really dont understand anything he said about the memory. Also they didn't really go into much about voltages? Can I get a decent clock leaving those standard?

I had the same case antec 1200, i7 920 D0, 6gb ocz reaper 1500 1866mhz ram, U12P x 2 fans but using prolimatech megahalems cpu cooler, geforce GTX260, corsair 750W power supply and Gigabyte EX58-UD5 motherboard, I managed to get 4.2 overclocked very well and stable over 24 hours with vcore setting at 1.300v and dram setting at 1.640v and my temperature never go over 75C after 6 hours prime 95 full load and 2 hours linx.
 
My board is different from your board. My board is gigabyte as it not much features like the EVGA X58 board does have many extra features. I was surprise it can do 4.5GHz on air cooler !!!! (amazing) I probably consider to try that board EVGA X58 on my other computer as I do have spare C0 i7 920 cpu processor chip.
 
Well I've been running prime for about half an hour and its not blue screened or anything, but the temps are still very high?

that's why his temperature is so low as there is no way 4.5Ghz for air cooler !

I think I followed the instructions and put a pea sized blob in the middle of the chip.

It was the paste that came with the chip. Although I do have another I ordered at the same time. That was arctic silver.
 
100 isn't good, nor is 'auto' under voltage sections. Point your cpu cooler so it's blowing air upwards out the big top fan.

Set everything to defaults, load windows. Load cpuz. Write down your processor voltage.
Go back to bios, set ram to 1.65V, cpu voltage to the above, the rest to the minimum not-auto you can set.
Increase blck, test using intelburntest. If it passes 10 tests and stays below 85 degrees, then return to bios and increase blck and retest
Stop once temperatures become too high or when voltage exceeds the intel spec. It'll probably be temperatures that stop you.

^thats the basics, from someone who doesn't have an i7 system yet. Id expect any guide you've read to say the same thing.


Graphics cards is simpler. I use evga precision, but this probably doesn't work with ati cards like yours. Use rivatuner (windows software, many guides online) to increase the speeds of the graphics cards a little bit, then test using furmark. Look for insane temperatures and graphical corruption, either of these means youve gone to far and need to back off the clocks a bit.
Once you know the highest stable, you can flash your card to use these as defaults. Up to you whether you bother doing so, it'll take about 15 minutes and ideally a floppy drive.

Try re-apply arctic silver 5 paste and spread all over cpu processor with a thin layer and again re-apply arctic silver 5 paste and spread all over cpu cooler heatsink plate and then attached the cpu cooler on the cpu processor and seated correctly. Then, you should see a much improvement in temperature. I did the pea sized blob but it didn't work out very well as temperature soared over 95C !!!

A thin layer is best one - kept my temperature below 75C on the 4.2Ghz overclocked for 6 hours prime95 ful load and 2 hours linux with stable.

My cpu cooler facing upward on top of my big fan on the antec 1200 case. It better blowed upwards.

No worries mate. Good luck mate and I do hope you will see your temperature a big drop tonight but do bear in your mind - it take up to 200 hours (approx 8 days) before AS5 get the temperature correct, my 9 days of paste idle temperature is:

Day 1: 44, 43, 44, 43
Day 2: 44, 42, 44, 43
Day 3: 43, 42, 43, 43
Day 4: 43, 42, 43, 42
Day 5: 42, 41, 42, 41
Day 6: 42, 40, 42, 41
Day 7: 41, 39, 40, 39
Day 8: 39, 37, 39, 37
Day 9: 39, 37, 39, 37

Impressive results, and patience the fact you recorded the same thing over 8 days JUST to see what difference the thermal paste made lol something I would never have thought have doing haha, thanks anyway, this proves that this stuff does actually work :)

Not so much. What were ambients when each of the recordings were measured? 6 degrees is well over the expected drop from as5 curing.

And these are idle, suggesting that the computer is likely in a different state each time.

Well yes that is true, I was banking on him having some common sense and keeping the evironments the same :p

Trust me, it will work out pretty well. My room temperature is varies from 19C to 21C on those 8 days.

Found some useful instruction from Arctic about how to apply paste:

Apply the thermal compound to the SMALLER of the two mating surfaces in
the appropriate thickness. The flatter the mating surfaces, the thinner the
layer that is required. Properly lapped processors and heatsinks will only
require a translucent haze on top of the core of the chip. Stock unlapped
processors and/or heatsinks with surface irregularities or that are concave
or convex will require a thicker layer to fill the resultant gaps. DO NOT use
your finger to apply or smooth the compound (skin cells, and oils again). A
razor blade or the clean edge of a credit card can be used as the application
tool. You may use whatever tool you choose as long as it is CLEAN and
allows you to control the application area and thickness
