Could anyone help me with overclocking some of my kit? i7 d0 920

Okay so im about to reapply the paste now, only just got round to it. Also realised it wasn't as5 i used the first time but will be now. Any tips before I go ahead?

Okay so something must be wrong, my temps are about 55ish idle non oc'd and WITH the extra noctua fan attached to the cooler. Went past 80 with few mins of prime.

Do not understand!

I am really so sorry to hear of your problem. Have you try different cpu cooler and try it again, if same problem with temperature, then it could be down to poor air flow in your case or probably too high on vcore, qpi/unicore vtt and cpu pll setting.

I wish I could help you out in person.

I could try the stock cooler but I cant see it being better. As for airflow I have improved it today by tidy the cables to an extent. Also the bios is on default with no overclock.

Could too much thermal paste do this? I tried putting a thin layer on both the chip itself and the base of the cooler but I wasnt sure how thin to go.

Thanks

I have heard that too much thermal paste can be a bit of an issue, but surely not to the extent of an extra 10 degrees or so?

Running around 42-44 now with that straight line method. Cheers for the link. Now to see if i can OC it again without temps going ape.
