Could I get a better build for the same money?

Hi there,

I'm trying to get some parts together so that a friend can build a new computer for my boyfriend for Christmas and would like your advice. He uses it mainly for gaming, and along with a few of his tips (he won't give me many because he wants a surprise!) and from reading on the forum I've come up with a build. Ideally I'd like to spend a little less than this but hopefully without compromising on quality. Are there any parts that really aren't worth what I'd pay?

He only needs the tower, no monitor mouse etc and we can use his old case.

Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game £149.99

Asus ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card + Colin McRae Dirt 2 Full Game + Ruby Doll £119.98

Gigabyte GA-P55-US3L Intel P55 (Socket 1156) DDR3 Motherboard £79.99

Corsair TX 650W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-650TXUK) £76.99

OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Dual Channel (OCZ3P13334GK) £70.99

Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD103SJ) £66.99

Sony Optiarc AD-7241S 24x DVD±RW SATA Lightscribe Optical Drive (Black) - OEM £19.99

Total: £586.42 (inc. VAT)

Any ideas? Thanks!
Vicky

You will be getting 2 copies of Dirt2 so just sell one on :)

Set-up looks pretty good not sure where you could save money.

For that sort of money, i think you've chosen just about the best there is.
A few things you could consider though are
- Slightly faster ram
- Maybe a 5850 if you can afford it :)
But if you dont want to spend more than £600, cant see anything wrong with that at all.

Consider a different brand of graphics card as Asus' rma support is shameful. You can probably reuse the optical drive from the current machine.

Only other place to save money is a lower wattage psu, but for the £20 or so there is in it, get the good one.

no, stick with the 5770, as later on if he gets another, it will be providing performance above the 5870

Possibly, but not in all scenarios. I run two 5770's by the way.

with twice as much memory

Doesn't work like that as each card needs a copy of the loaded textures in memory, so in essence you still only have 1GB of VRAM.

I had problems on the Beta 9.12 drivers, but running the Dirt2 hotfix drivers at the moment seems to have cured everything :)
