in the arse of england.
from 2001 to 2007 I was an XP boy, an OS I still rate very very highly and is the best choice platform for lower powered systems too imo. but in 2007, I went and got myself Vista for two reasons, DX10 and Halo2. I did run a dual boot for a while but eventually just migrated completely.

Vista to me has always been a disappointment given what was promised in the Longhorn days when it was under development. Still I persevered with its slowness, massive memory usage and general flakeyness hoping service packs would sort it out, which alas as of yet, haven't.

But today I installed Windows 7 (RC), and for the first time since XP, I am genuinely impressed! Its the little things that have made me smile, such as a much faster UAC system, vista`s always felt laggy so I just disabled it. The boot times are greatly increased, general performance is excellent, no more laggyness when first coming into the desktop.

And a really neat thing I noticed was how little you need to reboot your system when installing drivers!! I installed my ATI catalyst drivers, installed and ran a game, and all went beautifully.

The Theme sets are stunning, as is the folder viewing system, it really does feel much more polished and accessible. The task bars a little ugly but thats my only complaint so far. All in all a thumbs up from me.

P.s. no more widget bar that i can see. yey!

Vista and 7 have the same speed and memory usage for me. Not sure what you mean by "flakeyness". Vista was a great OS, loved it.

I enjoyed Vista, was a breath of fresh air after XP which is vastly outdated. Windows 7 is fantastic, hence why I've ordered copies for all our house computers :P.

i've recently upgraded to Win7 but that was straight from xp missing out vista. really liking it so far but cant comment on difference or issues with vista

I bought Vista Ultimate a few weeks back it's an Awesome OS. :D
I laugh in the face of the Guinea pigs & fart in the direction of Retail prices on release. :p

I think vista has been unfairly picked out. What exactly is wrong with it. Memory usage and bloatyness maybe - but windows 7 isnt exactly an XP beater on that front either.

Whats happened is everyones cryed about vista and will now settle for anything making windows 7 the best thing since sliced bread.

I'm not saying it isn't a good OS - its the best yet - but the only reason theres not so much of an opposition to it is because vista was classed as "bad" compared to XP.

I hate people who complain about memory usage!!!

What is the point in having unused ram? unused ram is wasted, its there for a reason, if windows would like to cache files in it, then it should, it'll help when loading up apps etc. As long as i gets out of the way when another app needed the ram (Which it mostly did).

Now I'm sitting here on 7 with a low ram usage of 1.5gb wishing windows would cache firefox, ableton live and all the other rograms I use regularly rather than wasting 2.5gb of ram.

Kinda been done to death this. If you know what you're talking about you'll appreciate Vista. Yes, Windows 7 is better, but that was to be expected.

Vista had a choppy start, partly because it was a significant change from XP and partly because of third party support (or lack of) and boy has it paid for it over the duration of it's life with all the FUD in circulation.

If Vista never existed and Microsoft dropped Windows 7 on us we'd have the same problems with people moaning about UAC and flaky drivers.

You know you can use the gadgets without the side bar?

I got vista for a mate (off the mm for a nice a reasonable price might I add) on the pure basis its now stable and nicer to use! (64bit might I add) Well mainly i can trouble shoot it from here in belfast actually so no more problems playing left 4 dead over the net :D

The last bad OS Microsoft released was Windows ME. Vista is decent with service packs and now the drivers have caught up; XP has lasted longer than anyone expected; 2000 is solid and some people still swear by it. I think MS get lots of stick they don't deserve.

Win 7 feels much cleaner and complete compared to Vista.

I've held off having Vista on my main machine and stuck with XP since it came out. I'm only just coming around to the idea of changing to Win 7 having used the trial on my laptop a lot whilst away from my main pc.

Ive only just considered a switch from xp to something newer, so i do hope the change is a very nice one.

Something about Seven does feel cleaner and easier to use than Vista, but Vista wasn't a bad OS when I used it briefly. I do like my XP and all, but I'm in need of change.

I removed Win7 from my other PC ,installed good old Linux,Win7 is decent but not the big jump over Vista x64 in my books or the hype some people give it ,also few things I hate in Win7 too ,however each to their own as they say.

I felt Vista needed SP1 to really "complete" it - not to say it was a bad OS at launch but there were things like the file copy bug that really should have been sorted before it hit the shelves.

I think the people that call it "Me 2" need a boot in the face. It's nothing like Windows Me, and never will be. In fact, Windows 7 is hugely based on it - name me the OS that Microsoft based on Me, because there isn't one!

fixed, and so true. been running vista 64 bit for ages now and it's all good! only people who moan about it now are those who don't use it.

Well that would be so obviously wrong given Ive been using the thing since 2007 and migrated the entire office late last year.

Just so all are aware, I haven't once said Vista was a bad OS, I said it was a disappointment. its always felt as if it were unfinished imo. its gaming and file performance pre SP1 were abysmal with some 15 to 20% of performance lost compared to XP.

far more than you would think given I used longhorn back in 2002. I look at windows 7 as the continued development and finalisation of the Vista program which I would bet my home on that it is.

as for nothing being based on M.E. your both right and wrong, many new features and functions of windows M.E. which had never been seen before in a home user O.S. were taken from it along with other features of windows 2000 and merged, and thus, XP was born. Features such as automatic updates, NT based file systems, it was the first private user OS to remove most real mode MSDOS access and begin the move away from home environment OS being stapled to it.

Other features that came from M.E. are:
Windows Movie Maker
Sound Mixing
Windows Image Acquisition API
Image Preview
system restore
system file protection protocols

and much much more. It may have been a buggy ridden piece of crap but we owe much of the goodness in XP and successive OS to its failed place in history.
