Could someone clarify OCUK's policy on coil whine?

i dont think coil whine is classed a fault and just luck if you get it or not

It may not be classed as a fault, but it is a result of faulty coil design or manufacture. Although it is possible that inadequate PSU quality could provoke a coil to whine.

I used to repair TVs, and once in a while I'd get a "whistling" TV in for repair. It was often the line linearity coil. Sometimes it could be repaired by applying lacquer to the windings, but often a replacement cured the problem.

But should you really need a 1000w psu for a gpu that says it needs less than 500w psu for that and the whole system?

They could sell guaranteed no coil whine gpu and psu bundles. And also stop recommending psus that offer just more than the gpu says it needs if down the line they are going to say "need a better psu"...

My coil whine only happens when something changes ie. Windows updates etc. Reinstall of gpu drivers makes it bareable.

Think they meant quality as in manufacturer usingmquality components. Season platinum or superflower etc. Nothing for sure tho but should help reduce risk of it occurring. Agree, you shouldn't need to over-spec the wattage aspect of a PSU. Don't recall having noticeable coil whine since my old Dell XPS 720 days which had it's own proprietary PSU.

Have say too that if it happens mostly in menu's I don't know why the game or drivers are allowing the screen to be drawn at 500FPS - should probably be limited :)

Well i thought the EVGA psus where second only to the superflower or on par with them minus the led on the plugs. That's what is said when you ask about them atleast.

Its not only in menus it happens othwrwise it would be a non issue.

EVGA are better (still made by Superflower), well the top range ones as they have extra breakers and safety components in the design over the superflower ones - again , all made in the same factory

I wouldn't even know what coil whine was if it slapped me in the face. No way I would hear it over my case fans. I don't get the whole "omg a slight noise" thing. I game with headphones anyway, Each to their own.

I have a whisper-quiet system, as in, if the monitor is off, I cannot tell if the system is on or not without seeing if the lights are on. I’d say coil whine would be extremely noticeable. Also, people can have very different sensitivities to noise.

Luckily I have always avoided coil whine so far. Interesting that it can also apparently be caused by the PSU, I never knew that.

My PSU is an EVGA SuperNova G2 850W '80 Plus Gold' which is fairly high end so i'd like to think it wouldn't be the culprit. I guess i'll just have live with it for now, i only hope it doesn't get any worse.
