What the difference really is performance and otherwise between IDE, SATA and SSD? Its been a while since I built a system so im pretty much clueless

IDE and SATA are type of connections

SSD are type of drives (solid state) and different to mechanical drives which can be either IDE or SATA connection

SSD will generally have much better performance, for seek times, and depending on which SSD you talk about for transfer rates too..

IDE (=pata) and sata makes very little difference, as either connection is far faster than the hard drive itself. Sata have slimmer cables and do some exciting things like hot plug, so are generally preferred.

You can hang two drives off a single IDE/pata cable but only one off a sata cable. However, motherboards tend to support six sata devices and two pata devices.

Finally ssd's are a completely different type of hardware. They are very fast, very good, and very expensive. They are also invariably sata connected.

It's all about speed. Ide is the oldest of the three technologies. It is also the slowest. There is Sata I, and Sata II. If I'm not mistaken Sata I can transfer upto 1.5GB per sec. and Sata II can move 3.0gb per sec. That does not mean that the HD itself is capable of reading or writing data that fast because none do unless connected together in a raid setup. SSD is the newest of the three technologies and is like a gigantic flash drive in the sense of how it reads and writes data. It has no moving mechanical parts inside, so is quieter, more energy efficient and can access data at extreme speeds reguardless of where the data is located on the drive. A regular HD uses plates to read and write data from and depending on where the arm is and where the data is located on the plate it could take longer to read the data some times than others. Also the SSD's also do not have to warm up like a typical HD and can access data way faster than the fastest HD on the market. HD's can be connected by both Sata or Pata (ide cables). SSD's are all Sata if i'm not mistaken.

Hope that helps.

Actually thats helped a lot Ninja, infact its all helped thanks guys

For my new set up I may start with a 30GB SSD to boot from and later add a Sata 2 for storage. is the OCZ Solid Series 30GB 2.5" SATA-II Solid State Hard Drive (OCZSSD2-1SLD30G) a good choice or should i invest in a higher priced model later on?

it is a great choice unless you are using Vista Ultimate which will take up almost all of your 30gb. I'd go at least 2 30gb's to run raid or just one 60gb. I have just one 60gb vertex and it is super fast, pretty much instant.

Hmmmm I was either going with Ultimate or Windows 7 and sadly am not rich enough for any other SSD at this point however it is something I will consider further down the line when I add more to my new build.

I'm not sure if your OS is legit but if you are not worried about having a legit OS then just find a Vista lite version off of a torrent site. Then you could get the 30gb, and later get another when you need it.

hmmmm its legit I downloaded the beta from the official site a little while ago which apparantly is working better than vista ever did. If I use that and its rubbish will invest in a copy of Vista Ultimate
