...come up with an argument that will convince my friend not to buy a qtec or a generic psu. I've tried and failed.

My other friend has a generic psu and it has been fine, and he has been saying to him just get a generic 600W psu for £15. :/

It's not the wattage he should be looking for I've been told. Something like the amps on the 12v rails or something?

Here is one reason.

Everyone who buys a Cheap Qtec for use on there main PC will have it blow up at some point, and like to me, it will kill a £800 PC.

If a expensive PSU blows, nothing else gets damaged. Also increased stability and lower noise.

If he still will not listen, he deserves to loose all his money as the PSU is by far the most important part of the modern PC.

You also need ATX 2.0+ for use on modern motherboards.

Oh and if either of your mates use MSN, add them, especially the one who recommended the Qtec.

besause there crap just tell him that... u get what u pay for... and as some people may tell you the PSU is one of the most important parts in a PC. that dies you'r pc dies... oh and when a qtec psu blows they doit with style... plus they dont support PCI or 24pin mobo's... so if he gets one well aint he a fool

Not to mention they can be very very loud, Qtecs in particular.

Heres some reasons:

1. Fire hazard

2. They kill computers

3. They are annoyingly loud

4. Build quality is crap

5. Cables are too short

6. They looks like rubbish

7. Most Qtecs don't even pass european safety regulations

8. They only supply about 50-60% of the power they say they do

9. They are inefficient, so the electricity will end up costing you as much as a good PSU in the long run. If it doesnt blow up before then.

What he said. Plus AFIAIK proper PSU's have built in circuits for protection in case it blows it doesn't take the other components with it.

If you guys are saying this is it a godd idea for me to invest in a new PSU, seen as i got one with my £34 case!

Deffo, Just get a decent one, spend about £50-70, It may not seem like a worthy investment to some since there is no performance increase, but theres your computers life span increase.

Although depending on the rig, the Antec 1650 case and psu bundle can be a superb buy if you are still using a Socket A / old P4 rig.

Not quite true, a few years back I built a PC for a friend: P4 2.8, 1Gb ram, 9800XT, 2 hard drives etc and I used a 500W Qtec. It's been used every day and is still going strong. Not all of them die and kill stuff.

I still wouldn't recommend them obviously ;)

tell him to buy one and then rig it up to something which will draw 650w from the psu (not the pc obviously)and he will not have seen a better firework display.

Ive seen this 'gold' 600W psu being sold on ebay for around £23 i thought to myself hmmm that would be interesting to buy and put into a high end rig maybe ill do a test run one day when im rich to see how long it lasts before blowing up :d
